FAO Maria - Re: iPhone
Just upgraded my iPhone yesterday to firmware 2.2.
It contains an option under messages to 'Disable SMS Preview' on the unlock screen.
Not sure if you were aware or not, but I know this was bugging you before!
Can still call any number from 'emergency call' tho! Doh!

And presumably i don't need to re-jail break it after i've done it?
Don't ask - I don't know

She's in Dubai with Porkie IIRC mate.

Yes it will be the same on 3G, and yes you will need to re-jailbreak.
Have a read here mate, instructions and downloads are there as well.
I think you are still on o2, therefore dont need to unlock, so heres your instructions:
Locked iPhone 3G
If you are using your iPhone with one carrier and have no interest in the possibility of an iPhone 3G unlock in the near future then just restore or upgrade to 2.2 using iTunes and use QuickPwn to Jailbreak and add Cydia and Installer.

You'd be better seeing if you can just start a new contract on 02 and getting it for free.
Last night i installed a little gizmo that lets you play the iphone like a flute (literally you hold it and blow into it and it plays music!) how cool is that, yes its gay and yes it will be deleted soon but as a gadget it's unreal!
Google Earth is cool too, when you tilt the phone the image tilts away so you look into the horizon.
Endless Apps make it such a cool gadget, oh and i put a speed camera detector on it too!
may have to have a chat with O2.. Still got 6 months left on my contract though, so was tempted to get one off contract... £350 is abit much though tbh.
From what I have seen they are the tits...
Are the 2g ones ok as these seem o go for a bit less..

Not sure mate, Stu.H has a 2g one.
They are awesome though, once jailbroken you can do all sorts to customise it too...and there are thousands of Apps that you can add to do little bits and bobs.
For instance it's taken a little stick for the camera not being good, i installed a program last night that monitors the accelerometer in the phone and as soon as it's still it takes the pic for you, so no more poor focus pictures! and people are coming up with new things every single day!

lol the 3g ones are not reaching full 3g speed anyway (recently having to pull down national tv ads as false advertising not fast internet) . why they didnt go for the 3.5g (hspda) i dont know. im a heavy user of 3g, didnt do it for me. n95 8gb nets flys, ok its hasnt got a fancy interface. ive had iphone and went back to nokia
The internet may be slightly quicker on the Nokia, but that is all I can think of as far as advantages go!
Bet if you timed loading this site on the two phones there might be a second or two in it..... hardly the end of the world, and a sacrifice well worth making for the millions of things it does better

for a phone that from factory that doesnt even copy the sim contacts , my crappy 10 quid samsung does that, everything is 3rd party web developed for it. its not a bad device , dont get me wrong. but Apple have missed out the basics of a Telephone. i bet i can send a emal on my blackberry 8800 quciker then the nokia and the apple. its a gimmick imo.
then the crappy cam they shipp with tt, even you have to agree thats poor ???
the basic bluetooth function is for headset only (very useful) i use bluetooth to shift m,y work data alot. maybe some peeps dont use there "smartfones" to the xtent theya re designed to use

I certainly dont, but i love my N95 8GB, the way how i know ive got everything at my finger tips should i need it, and it works very well as a normal "phone" i.e texting is very easy, calling etc is easy, and how much it can be custimized

Or do you mean under the "passcode lock" settings?

If so, that was there all along, I've been using that since 2.1! I had hoped they would have added an SMS option to the settings menu, with the ability to turn off SMS notifications all together - not just on the lock screen but also on the home page or when you are in an app - very annoying having a video pause cos a text came in, and even more annoying (and potentially dangerous
As for the lock screen SMS preview - sadly, since the 2.2 update, although it still doesn't show the CONTENTS of the message, it now tells you who sent it. Mine used to say "NEW TEXT MESSAGE" but now it says NEW TEXT MESSAGE - with the persons name above it! Like so;

Thing is I really don't need it - I have Notifier installed which gives me all the info I need on missed calls, new texts/emails etc;

That gives me everything I need to see at a glance. Along with that, it also tells of voicemail and picture messages, new calendar invitations (if you sync OTA with Exchange, iCal or MobileMe) and note the little icons in the status bar on the top? They also show when in apps;

Been there all along - not a 3rd party app : just part of the standard Apple OS...

Great arent they tho, I need to stick some progs back on after upgrading. I used SSH to copy my contacts and notes as thats the only thing I would miss.
U tried the accelerometer Thrush? Its surprisingly accurate!
Great phones, wouldnt be without mine!

Oh, the person that asked about 2G vs 3G
Not a lot of difference - head phone jack has been sorted so u can use any headphones in it (2g needs adapter) but Ive read about poor battery life on the 3g ones (due to constantly looking for 3g)
New iPhone has GPS, although tomtom hasnt been released yet for it (AFAIK).
No sim carrier unlock has been finished for the 3G model, therefore they are stuck to o2 until they do. 2G was busted open months ago.
Get a 2G

Also, using winpwn, quickpwn etc you can (afaik) unlock and jailbreak all firmwares EXCEPT 2.2( unlocking 2.2 only works on 2g atm )
Here are some links you might find useful...

My 2g uses any headphones... Normal sized jack in the top of the phone. Never needed an adapter...

Fez - only the 2G phones can be software unlocked (as in, unlocked to use on a different network other than O2). The 3G, regardless of firmware revision, cannot be software unlocked as of yet. There are hardware unlocking methods (rebelSIM, turboSIM, Any-Network sim adapters) but these are unreliable at best, and most don't work after (iPhone) firmware updates.
Also, anyone with a 3G phone that might want a software unlock in the future, is advised NOT to upgrade to 2.2 and use WinPwn to jailbreak it, as it may well render it completely non-unlockable in the future (something to do with baseband modification)

Ah, my bad. From what I had read, I was under the impression that 3g could be unlocked to any carrier but that the latest firmware, 2.2, changed the baseband and as such relocked the phone.
I stand corrected.

It's the one thing stopping me getting a 3G iPhone!
You can get officially unlocked 3G iPhones from Italy, Greece, Cyprus, New Zealand and hong kong, that will work with any GSM carrier, but they sell for ££££££'s!!!!

Just for info (can't remember if I mentioned it already)
2.2 CAN be jailbroken on the 3G, BUT if you do it as is now, it will disable the ability to unlock it in future.....
