Default Is this normal? (headgasket question)

Removed the head from the Cossie this evening due to a leaking h/g.
When i got it all apart, i noticed on the block/head there were kidney bean shaped water ways, both inlet and exhaust side.
But on the gasket, there is only holes for the water to pass on the one side??
Gasket looks identical to this

There are rusty marks on the old gasket, where its looks as if the water has been blocked off by the gasket??
This can't be right??

Apologies for my highly techinical terms.
