Default People who know about H R

The group I work for, for the past 6 months have been sorting out a new I.T. structure.

Anyway got a letter though that my job title has changed and I will be looking after another server room in a large data centre.

On the letter it's says terms and contions have not changed.

correct me if I am wrong, my terms have changed

therefore I need a new contract?

does this sound right?

your thoughts

thanks

I had a similiar situation quite recently so this is from experience rather than being informed in HR matters. I did seek outside advice as I thought it was a bit sinister but it's quite common.

Is the only change to your job title?

From your description , it seems to me that you already look after server room(s).

Looking after an additional server room isn't a change to terms and conditions if you still recieve the same salary and benefits. However, if hours, shifts etc. change, then it would be a change to terms and conditions.

It would be worth checking your contract to see if there is any information about required duties etc. Most of them are quite broad and not too specific when it comes to actual duties. If it states something like: "you are employed as a XXXX to maintain equipment in server room 1" then looking after 2 rooms would be a change.

Agree with Shanny, your terms haven't changed, responsibilities have, but thats not generally contracted in writing

you can't "fuck them" as such, but you can ask for more if your workload and responsibilities are increasing surely?

Don't push, as its not worth the risk (in the current climate as you say) unless you genuinely need more money, but asking can't hurt

If you've been spending all your working week looking after your existing workload, and you now have to travel to another site to carry out work, something has got to give.
Either the quality of work done will be lower OR
You will be working longer hours to fulfil the same quality over an additional site plus existing.

If you are on a Salary with fixed hours and you end up working longer for the same money, something has changed.
If you are on hourly rate you will possibly still end up working longer hours and earning more cash of course something has changed again, but depends if your contract says O-T as required or not.

You need to find out EXACTLY how your employer wants you to work in the new setup.
Somewhere in there is an opportunity to "Improve" your earnings.

thanks mate,

The other data centre will be 3rd line support only, eg have SAN problem or setup a new cluster. I don't think I will be bothered much on a normal week day, but I am sure I will have to do lots more weekend work. All I get for weekend work is time in lue, which I hardly ever take off due work during the week.

I've had job titles change before in permanent roles and it didn't require a change of contract. If your contract specifies multiple locations (at their discretion, no doubt), then adding another location wouldn't warrant a contract update either.
