i know they supply fuel to the swirlpot and then the other pump feeds the engine, that bit i get

what i dont get it why dont you need the same flow pump to lift as the feed

also any diagrams of one of em set up to hand anyone or general rules to remember when installing one too

 

If its not the same flow, then the engine's pump will empty the swirl pot and there will be nothing left to pump!

 

You don't need it to be the same, but simply if your lift pump can't flow what your engine is demanding, then eventually the resevoir will empty if you keep the demand held in for long enough!

thats what i was getting at though

say i used a 044 bosch pump for the feed and the standard intank pump for the supply ith a swirl pot how come it wont run out is my question or is it cause its only high end the pump cant flow enough and the swirl pot uses the extra then and when its not needed it fills back up again

It's because the lift pump isn't working as hard as there's no regulator in the swirl pot to create pressure..

Pump flow is given at a known pressure, like an 044 is 200 litre/hr @ 5 bar.. but at 1 bar it'd flow an awful lot more!

now what sort of swirl pot options have i got, i ideally dont wanna use quip in the car,,,, also i DONT want a boot stinking of fuel either !!!!

 

Reyland can supply internal or external swirl pots with choice of AN/JIC or push on fittings. It doesn't need to be massive either so i'm sure you could easily find space for it under the boot somewhere.

Bear in mind that the type of setup drawn above, can lead to heating up of the fuel in the swirl pot more than if you return the fuel rail return to the tank.

The system you have posted is the least likely to ever have a problem with the swirl tank running empty, and is the simplest to implement, so its how a lot of people do it.
Fuel temperature should be a consideration though if doing it, the larger the swirl pot the smaller the increase in temp generally.

 

im thinking a 3litre swirl pot tbh, its just cause ive now got the suspension and brakes done that im gonna start on the engine and i need to start with the parallel fuel rail mod and uprated fuel pump,,,,,, and as i already have a brand new 044 from my cossie its gonna be the cheepest option

Ginge, as you asked the question, simple put, the low level lift pump needs only to be just that, low pressure resonable flow, but no where near what your engine needs, the std swirl chamber size is only one litre, this is great for short term blasts and unless you are going to consume more than one litre of fuel in the time that you are at full throttle then theres no need for it to be bigger, if that is the case then you will need larger reserve, i.e a bigger chamber, and the return from teh fuel rail always comes back to the swirl pot, this then has a smaller bore return back to the main tank, thus keeping the swirl pot at a relativley low pressure, and also to allow air out of the swirl chamber into the main tank where air is no problem(good tank ventillation assumed).

its so simple to do, yet not many do it, ive run swirl chambers for years and never had fuel surge since i started to use them,
