Actually, what has killed them was their wholsesale supply of CDs and DVDs - their subsidiary business EUK.

Approximately two years ago, they lost the contract to supply Tesco, who are now the second largest purchaser of media entertainment, and it's hit their profits massively.

That, coupled with a lack of forethought and no market definition means that it was only a matter of time.

Each tesco delivery from handlemans (who took contract) is bigger than euks delivery to all other supermarkets, woolies etc put together in a average town.

MASSIVE MASSIVE LOSS.

What a shame for all those people out of work. Not to mention the burden on the giovernment when they need paying benefits to survive.

This government really has no idea what its doing. Dropping the tax a little bit now but actually gonna make us even more worse off next year and the year after. Government said they were helping, independant body said it was rubbish and they were gonna make us worse off!

Funny that you mention that, I just finished an essay on a similar topic for uni today - seems a shame that they have gone but to be honest I can't see there being much of a void left in the market. Most/everything they sold is available else where.

Who's next then???

I've just gone back to work (meat/dry good distribution) after a 2 week holiday expecting it to be busy and it was proper dead compared to what it should be. We should be busy now getting ready for xmas parties but the work load is dropping by the day as bar/clubs etc aren't buying, lucky we have the complete council contacts to keep us going.

they won't close until after xmas seeing as they have reported in the news that there is as much as a 90% rise in sales in this run up

so no one is going to close them down if they can earn some sort of money from it

WHSmith will never have a money issue. I use to work for them and i can tell you that they don't make near enough cash as they do on the high street than with the WHSmith Travel Brand. Airports and Train Stations prices are stupidly high.

I remember paying 83p for a Wispa Bar, £6.55 for a deck of 20 and £1.85 for a small Vimto.

But i must say that walking down the high street and not seeing woolworths will be strange. Its been there since i was a child.
