Default Mk3 RS1600i Zetec Turbo (flocked dash in, show cage fitted, better pics)

After much umming and arring, i was prsented with this at a good price of 820. So, it will be giving up its engine for the rs1600i. It does have some uprated pistons in it, but the owner isnt sure what. either way, it isnt a decomp plate. so worth the gamble i thought. the conversion was done in 2002, and has been in there ever since so it must be fairly solid and well built. Rest of car will be broken to fund it all, got 17s, RS1600i steering wheel, half leather in good nick, delocked doors, 90 spec bumper, vented bonnet and thats the easy stuff to sell on. Collecting it next sat

Heres the car ready for it.........

Now heres the cabby in question..........

Car runs okay, but does need an alternator. No knocks or bangs and currently dont know wat management/ECU it has but if i need to, will go down Megasquirt route.

Next issues -

* ideally need a S1 gearbox, dont want to use the RS1600i one
* what loom its using, as im keeping a mk3 dash so using a mk4 loom is a complete pig to change all the dash connectors
* answer all the people who keep telling me im ruining the car.......never mind

Looks like the half leathers that the tennis edition had. I have a spare set of rs1600i seats, so might try putting the RS1600i seat centre pads into these seats. Might look nice or might look cack. Can only try!

Engine mounts and gearbox are my biggest concern right now though

Look at the simply shocking mess of the engine bay.......

Nearly all out now. Waiting to get my hoist back. Pics will follow when out. Its a shame to rip it out, as it looks like it was a proper turbo technics car, but i want something modern for her now.

Note the sharp bend in the pipe, the kinked fuel line and vacuum line to the DV

As mentioned though, the car does not have one rust bubble or anything, anywhere. (the little brown bits by the battery are leaves!)

At a cross roads now, do i change the dash to a mk4 one? Opinions welcome! Its impossible to find an uncracked one, i know i can fit a mk3 plastic one, but its not the same as it doesnt have the big ash tray and bit to meet the centre console. Therefore that isnt standard either!!

By changing to mk4, will also allow me to use the entire loom from the cabby

Small update. Cabriolet is now here and nearly ready to give up its engine. RS1600i has lost its dash which has gone to be restored and flocked at RapidFord. Loom has been fully removed from car and a S1 loom will be replacing it, but with the addition of a nice new engine loom.

Also went and collected these little beauties today, Brembo 4 pots and 325mm discs. They look like theyve only done a few thousand miles so all good! Only issue is the wheels wont fit over these, maybe the perfect excuse for some nice Comps?? See what you think

Having any time off work is a BAD thing! Sh*t loads done today...........

Interior completely out, loom fully out now, engine ready to drop now. Took wheels off and found some cossy brakes as well! BONUS! They will be on ebay before tonight is out. Loom is a bit of a mess, so will be having a rethink. May sit down and try with this one, becasue the engine did run okay. (running OFAB currently) Plenty of money been thrown at it though. Found a rolling road printout, and if im reading it correctly, the car made 181bhp @5810rpm at 10psi (!?!? seemed low to me). Nice torque as well 183lb/ft. Havent established what the turbo is yet, but its quite small so guessing maybe a fiesta T2 at the moment. But power seems very high for a T2 at 10psi (or is it?)

Car looks very sad indeed, but is rotten so i dont feel bad.

Thats quite cool! Yeah the cabby had a lot of money spent, but im sorry to say the sills were just not even there when i pulled the seals off! Fllor was okay, but front panel was rotten as well. The car is quite a mess now im afraid.

Anybody got any history on the car though, especially the engine as the spec is largely unknown. Didnt get all that much with it.

And then the engine was out of the shabby cabby. Engine bay was disgusting to work on, everything was so dirty, so will have to deal with some oil leaks first!!

Also have some pics of a trial door card that ive done. What do we think of this? (also bear in mind the dash is being flocked)

Scary pic of the seats as well......

Boring update, but necessary.........

Had a little wipe down in the arches of the RS1600i, and look how clean it is! Nice to not have to rip it all out. Brakes coming off though as mentioned.

Nice cam cover arrived...........graphite with nice finish ready to smarten up the bay a bit

Collected the S1 loom and S1 box today...... Started to tackle the loom and my god this is very very boring. Going through the whole thing, sorting it all out, removing 20 years of sh*t alarms and immobilisers, crimping on new earth terminals, and cleaning wiring plugs. I believe this will pay off big style....... One pic shows what ive done with the plugs for example

The pic below shows what i removed from the loom!! So much hidden crap and all no doubt had a nasty effect on the loom.........

And my dinner...........

Cheese on toast with some lea and perrins finest :thumb:

Loom now ready to go in!!!

As i saved so much on the engine, i was determined to have a nice interior..........

I do not like the standard RS1600i interior, and i like to have very nice seat (hence my GTi having leather Recaros as well) So i got these Mitsubishi EVO seats. The black suede will go with the doorcards and the flocked dash. I want a nice modern twist to this classic car, and i think im getting there with it.

Dont worry, i will put the original interior back in when i sell her (which i will do) and then the Recaros will end up in the GTI.......

Okay, dash fitted and looks f*cking sexy if you ask me! Pics will follow of that when switches/stuff are completed.

Now the wheels, given them a very very thorough cleanup, and looks like one will need a refurb, rest are okay. May change the colour at a later date to anthracite, but for now, i like them! Trial fitting of the worst alloy just to check clearance etc and im very happy!

Apologies again for the SH*t camera pics
