me and my mate are looking at going joint into a track car, and weve found an ever popular 205 gti for sale already part prepped for track, not sure on the spec as my mate has rang it, but going seeing it tomoz, and as they are ever popular on here,
what do people look for on these? apparently the rear arch is corroded and he reckons it will need a couple of patches of welding, its not road legal at the min, but apparently can be put back with minimum of fuss.
not sure if its a sunroof model or not.. its an 88 car!
any help appreciated!

Apart from the usual things to check when buying a car here are some 205 GTi specific things to check;
The floor pan in the boot rusts away as this area wasn't factory undersealed.
The arches tend to rot away under the plastic wheel arch trims due to dirt accumulating there.
There is a steel coolant pipe bolted to the inner O/S wing down near the crank pulley that is crimped into a rectangular section that rots away too.
There shouldn't be any knocks from the suspension, check the rear tyres for scrubbing as this most probably is from a bent rear beam (they can be straightened but it's easier to buy a 2nd hand beam).
A sloppy gear lever is probably from one of the linkage ball joints ovalling the hole through which it passes in the front subframe (either get the hole drilled larger and fit a top hat spacer or take the frame off and get it welded).
Rear beam mounting bushes split cause the beam to move (check this by driving slowly forwards and backwards past an observer and yank the hand brake on and see if the rear wheel moves backwards or forwards relative to the arch).

my friend who i will be sharing this with is well into his clios and recently sold a 53 reg 172, this 205 has purely come along by chance, and for the price that the guy is asking it might be silly to not buy it as i think we could break it for more than it would cost to buy!

well stand in the back and see if you have equal movement
or jack it up and see if the rear wheels move ok, with the help of a wheel brace
VERY common for them to seize

i've got a 89 black 1.9 track car
just find it a it to slow, any cheap wee jobs worth doing to make differance?
its a bit tail happy on the bends, any idea on a common problem?
rear bushes aer fine and its not siezed, it it at standard height and i've not been to shy with the speed into the corners so could it just be me trying to hard?
also if anybody local wants to buy it its available for 400, stripped out with buckets

just been and looked at the one i was on about, felt nice and solid, no knocks from suspension, slight wear on outside of rear tyres, no oil leaks/smoke, engine picked up well, standard brakes but it was deffo lowered, couldnt see any markings on the shocks/springs, but the springs were red :P passenger rear arch fooked however, big hole, but easily welded imo! 5 1.6 gti wheels with decent crap tyres lol, indicators dont work, but its not road legal!
have pictures will post up later
have left a deposit and should be picking it up in a couple of weeks...

first thing you need to check before going out on track, is what the hell the harness are connected too

if they are just bolt to the boot floor. REMOVE them and bolt to seat belt ancher points
