Martin - when i pop down i'll bring you a standard Evo rod that i retrieved after someone misheard the advice of "your boost controller is set, you have no reason to touch it"
They are remarkably skinny - can instantly see why non MR/9 engines aren't safe over 350lb/ft.
Sorry to hear about your engine Steve

If it was standard internally then fair enough its not as tough as ppl think, but if its been rebuilt & not very well it will blow just like a cossie engine thats not been built well
i ran an evo 8 fq 300 for two years and 32,000 miles with no problems at all! not as modified as yours tho, it had a 3" system, uprated pump, w,r,c remap h,k,s blow off and mushroom filter! reguraly seen wrong side of 170, (on the clocks anyway) without as much as a squeak! p,s,,,, car had also done 22,000 miles when i bought it! gutted for ya tho matey
Sorry to hear this Dingy, but no, Evos are not unreliable. YOUR Evo is.
Mine has done 14000 miles this year, as in 14 thousand. Almost entirely to track days and around tracks, plus 3 Ring trips. In just under a year.
I've had to fit a new Track rod end. That is is it. Ł25 it cost me.
It has regular oil services and then gets driven like I stole it with no drama at all.
You've been very unlucky with yours, which is a shame as I'm sure you would have enjoyed the car more if it had worked more often more of the time.
Did you or the previous owner have any form of warranty with whoever built up the forged engine your car runs? Rods should deffo not be exiting the block

freak occurance..
my mates evo 8 ran 360 bhp on standard rods and was totally trouble free... now runs 440 on standard pistons and uprated rods..
only gets used on track and the thing has been faultless.

Good man, then piece it back together bigger and better / faster!
I really need to look at forging mine (with a bit of a Stroker too) soon, as although mine has worked well so far I know it won't last forever and as per most people on here, I WANT MORE POWER!
Mine is mild, 320 bhp as I'm only running a fuel pump, spark plugs, 3" exhaust and no cat with Ecutek remap. The cams (which are a mild spec in the 260 models) and the small ish (9.8) exhaust housing limit what I can do with it. 350 would be max out of my current spec, but I'm happy enough with the go go at the mo.
I've read reports of standard rods letting go at 300 bhp and people running FP Green turbos at 450 bhp on standard rods with no problems. Really seems hit and miss, but most Evos seem to be happy at 350 bhp.
After forging and stroking, Evos seem to breeze 500, 600 and 700+bhp.
Hmmm 700 bhp

Unlucky Dingy!
Have'nt really had any big issues with mine in 3years of ownership.
Couple of clutches a box and a steering rack - warranty sorted everything bar the clutches.
Si 700 in an Evo's a riot especially with a bang bang box

Evo's are not unreliable at all, I have NEVER had one that we have tuned die or even break down at all for that matter, not even a reported missfire in 8 years of tuning them. When modded right they are pretty bomb proof, which is of course one of the main reasons they they are so popular.
Normally the standard components are pushed past their already high limit, or they are replaced with sub-standard components. Not the cars fault in either scenario, just bad tuning in 99% of cases.
Yours ma well just be a case of bad luck, all marques have Cases of bad luck, but i feel its unlikely since you suggest the bottom ends been replaced, and its a part of the bottom end that just broke.

Sadly for the people who are saying that they are reliable.
My own experience - they are the most unreliable car in the world LOL....so i will have to disagree based on my own experience.
I will find out why it failed....
Just so you know this car had a new engine build due to a previous engine failure...
Bottom end has been rebuillt and thats let go unless its dropped a valve and thats taken the bottom end out LOL....who knows...
All i know there is a hole in the engine that shouldn't be there...
Car is coming back home today - so i will start taking the engine out tonight and post some pics up as and when i get to that stage

Think your wasting your time lads trying to explain to dingy that they are reliable he has made his mind up & totally ignoring the fact he has bought a lemmon with a shonky engine build..Sorry dingy but that is fact like it or not
Carlo - don't tar me with the blinkered brush that you seem to have done.
In my experience my evo has been unreliable in many ways....i know standard cars will be reliable but am not talking about that am talking about my own experiences with a modified car.
Until i find the cause i cant comment....
My run of bad luck....
Radiator bust
Turbo Bust
ECU bust
engine bust
Done 400 miles in this car and the engine has done around 2400miles...
So I think its unreliable....
I am not comparing tuners or starting a war here am just posting my experience nothing more.....
when i put
It has a LOL after it and is meant very tongue in cheek.....but anyone who actually personally knows me would think that

as posted on MLR all you ever do is moan moan moan
You bought a pup had no idea what your were buying, didn't research what your were buying and hey presto look whats happened
YOU CAN ONLY BLAME YOURSELF!!!
with all the money you now spent you could've quite easily bought an 8 MR modified or none modified and had a totally 100% reliable 320+ BHP or near as dammit 400BHP with a modified MR
Total Lack of Knowledge is the fault here and that means YOU!
