Default engine conversion options into a rover 214?

my mate just popped around for me to have a look at his car as its playing up, do i got the compression tester out and looked it over here was what i found:

cylinder 1=16 bar
cylinder 2=0
cylinder 3=16bar
cylinder 4=16 bar i put a little oil bown the cylinder and cylinder 2 raised to 3 bar. i then started the car up and had a look over it again, noticing a tiny amount of white smoke and low water level im thinking a head gasket causing damage to rings on cylinder 2?

So we thought if he's to spend money sorting it then why mess about with the 1.4? anyone know what engine conversions are common and fairly easy in the 214? cheers

Anything thats NOT a k series basically..........

The M20 from the coupe turbo would go quite nice. Or as Martoon suggests, a VAG 1.8T

VVC is still a K series..... While they were fantastic design wise, and made great power for it's size. But it seems they forgot to finish designing it in great british tradition.

The M20/T16 from the Rover coupe turbo would go in without having to spend big dollar on mounts and so on. But the VAG engine will last longer and make more power and better drivability. If it was me, I'd be finidng the 5k for martoons conversion, and If I ever go insane and buy a Rover thats the engine I'd be getting

Comes from plenty of things, 220 Turbo, 220 Coupe Turbo, 420 turbo, 600 Ti, 800 etc.

Cheap as chips to do now and the conversion shouldn't even take you a day if you have the engine, loom and ECU, sub frame everything just swaps over. I think all you need is a Diesel gear box*mount*but its that long since i helped do one i cant remember all the details.

If he's going to keep it 6 months I suggest a new h/g and then punt it

I'd get the 1.8T from Reyland. A VW/Audi engine and box.. Much better.

The M20/T16 or whatever it's called is a bit shit to be honest

He's better just getting rid of it with the 1400 in...

The T16t engine is so shite my mate did a 11.9 with his at Pod. All that was changed was ECU, Pistons, Turbo and Manifold. Andy N didnt do to bad with one either iirc.

£5k for VAG conversion or £1k max with labour for T16t swap. The Vags a better engine but theres a massive price difference. I am thinking about a 200bubble with a T16t for a cheap track car, but then i know them and can do all the work myself so wont cost me £500 for the conversion.

Rab i know the VAG engine is a shit loads better mate, that doesnt mean the T series engine is shite though does it? The question was whats a cheap and easy engine conversion thats why i suggested it.

Thats not why I think the T16/M20 is shit. It's because of constant problems with one my mate had, which caused me no end of grief. Meaning I now have a total hatred of the engine....

I came up with a good way of extracting the oil, water, and internals from a T16 engine. It involved 150mph for 10minutes flat out, then engine did the rest of work lol.
