Electricians.. How come my dyno fan switch has sooo many wires?
It's a single fan (quite large) and the control box is a mass of wires, why?

It's probably an invertor/speed controller?
Ours is a box of quite considerable size, with 2 cooling fans, so I'm not surprised to see that.

looks like a 3 phase motor star delta starter to me complete with a isolater and start/stop push buttons. The star delta starter is a method of reduced voltage starting used on motors over a certain size to reduce mechanical enertia (spelling) and electrical inrush + it has protection for the motor
Hope this helps
Kind regards Frank

I can also see a latching contactor, presumably so you don't have 3-phase going through the 'on' swtich.

i can see the main, star and delta contactor, and a timer to control the transition point between star and delta

They´r right, a softstart is a much better system, but this is actually build because it will overload the fuses and powerlines in no time when it starts up, so it will start in star delta and save you from building a HUGE power outlet.
7500watt is about 32 amps and the start current is maybe arr 150amps (cant remember the right formular to this) if it starts up normally, but this system makes it to start up with maybe a third of that.

7-10 times FLC is a good guild to starting current!
fans are terrible as they need alot of torque to drive, as the load is never disconnected!

No,
But check that the overload is set to approx 0.58 F.L.C. (set on the small yellow dial under K.1M)
.

The 0.58 depends on how your s/d starter is laid out though m8.

you are right of cause, if the thermal overload is on the delta contactor it should be set to 0.58 FLC,
i dont really like doing this method, as generally everyone over rates there motor size when designing a system and the motor never runs anywhere near FLC, so i always test!
