How the hell do you sell it?

I had a gold bracelet from my younger days () which I wanted to flog, so took it to a jewelers for a valuation.....

Basically he said to value it for insurance purposes at £1800, so asked him If he wanted to buy it............. He then offers me £300

WTF is that all about, so after I stopped laughing I asked him If he was actually serious, and jis excuse was it needed cleaning!

So how the hell do you sell something like this?

stick it on ebay. you wont get anywhere near £1800 though, even if cleaned. the price for insurance purposes is always way higher than what you would get selling it

Go to a few jewellers for a few more valuations. If you want to pm me the exact weight and carat, I can get my mrs to find out, she used to work at a jewellers, so should be able to find out.

Jewellers ALWAYS give you a high insurance value that dont mean thats what you'll get for it when they say £1800 you might as well half that then half it again then thats around what it would be worth. It gose by weight most of the time so how much dose it weigh??

It's best to get it weighed before you sell/put it on ebay as thats what alot of people will want to know how much it weighs. 9ct gold at the moment is about £4.85 a gram

Dunno how they work these things out but who's going to realistically pay 1800 quid for a gold chain?
From a jewellers point of view he's then got to add his profit on top of this, leaving a very small market of footballers and other stupid rich people as potential buyers.

You need some kind of specialist gold merchants, check the yellow pages.
There used to be one local to me but it closed down years ago, so they do exist.

I'm not making up to impress you know, that's what 'he said' and that made his offer so funny!

I'm only looking to sell for 2 reasons........ 1). I've outgrown all that bling shite and 2). to put towards our wedding rings.

Where did you buy it and how heavy is it? £1800 down hatton garden will get you a fat chain, but as already said you need a specialist to take it to, the price of gold is up and was scrapping@ £9.00 a gram last time I looked,

depends of course on carat and weight

I don't doubt your story at all.
My sister in law works for a jewellers.

My point was you need a specialist merchant.
I wonder if you could take it along to the ring shop and arrange some kind of part-ex?

If its any help we had a heavy pendant that i got the mrs when we were younger. It just sat there doing nothing as i'd bought her some much better stuff recently. Anyway we had it valued and were told the top money it would achieve and the best way to sell it is at auction. We watched near on identical stuff on ebay for weeks and stuff wasn't selling or achieving the money. We had the pendant and a few rings weighed at several places and after laughing in their faces at some silly offers we weighed it all in for the best money we could get.

We could have got more at auction but it's a gamble if the right people aren't about on that day. Plus you've got the fees to pay out of it. We took a hit and just turned it back into cash. Its a shame but its all worth more in weight and yellow gold just isn't as popular.
