Default Will i need a plate for my exhaust?

Just bought a 4" rolled out mongoose exhaust for the ERST and wondered will i need a plate for protection of the heat or will it be ok and there just for show?

Would like to know as i dont really want one... as i think they look rubbish...

But just want to check as i dont want to damage my rear bumper.

thanks,

Shep.
