Default Big expensive to run cars...

What are peoples on thoughts on what is going to happen to the value of these?

Are we going to see alot of cars that cost a mint to run being put up for sale cheap

or

are we going to see alot of poorly maintained cars because the owners cannot afford to run them?

I know people will disagree, but another £200 for the tax isn't going to make me sell mine. I appreciate it will be a final straw for some poeple though.

What it will do, as you suggest, is make buyers more aware and not help sellers of high emitting cars resulting in falling prices. POssibly bargain time for petrol heads

I'm waiting for the V8 Cayenne to drop to a suitable price so I can shut the wife up

I am the same - if i can afford to run a car like that, then i can afford the tax.

lets be honest - its about £30 a month to tax under the new tax rules next year. not a massive amount, its one night out less a month if you go out every weekend, you know?

Im a buyer, with the money, just dont know if i should buy or wait..

it'll be the death knell for bigger motors once they start getting down the auctions

if you can have a ig engined motor that's 10 years old for a few quid then who's going to want to buy the newer one for several tiems that ammount?

shit's other than the mondeo, i've bought my last 5 cars for less than it's going to cost me to tax it in the coming year

so i'm going to find out how much it costs to tax this year, then send it back for a refund and tax it again at the lower rate ebfore 2009 comes into effect

Prices WILL drop like a stone and are already doing so.....

Okay if this doesn't worry you as you're about to buy one, but a bit of a shit that the value of your XYZ has dropped by a good few k.

It was estimated that the government's new tax system will wipe a total of a couple of BILLION off the value of all the second hand cars made after March 2001 that are adversely affected by the new tax system.

Obviously all the usual suspects (car related bodies) are lobbying against the new system, on the basis that it is killing people financially to introduce such a retrospective tax system. Whether anything is done remains to be seen.

Will this affect cars before March 2001?

We all know this government has no back bone - as proven with the income tax farce!

Agreed - as an example, the value of a pre March 2001 M5 will be significantly greater than a post March 2001 M5, which is stupid, but that is the predicament the government has created .

Only from a fuel economy point of view (as in people are going for more economical cars) - not a good time to be a car dealer of any description at the moment . Where as post March 2001 have this AND the increased car tax to deal with.

OBVIOUSLY that was based on cars of similar mileage / condition / spec.

of course - however most pre and post M5's tend to be of similar spec, and mileage is neither here nor there - ive seen pre 2001 car with star ship miles and no miles, same as post 2001 cars.

As I said in the other post, one of her friends who's a neighbour has the X5 so we'd like to be different(read get one up ).

Anyway, she's just put a deposit down on a conservatory so she's getting sweet FA on the car front at the moment

Local garage has a Ford KA for £2995 and a new 'round front' Jag for £3395
I think that says it all.

Wait as long as you can. Even folk who are initially bullish about the costs may eventually be worn down by it all and sell up in frustration.

Its worth spending a few quid getting the wifes 15 year old MR2 serviced for another year now, rather than looking for something newer.

I actually bought a bigger engined car when I realised that our old V6 2.5 was going to cost lot's more to tax and for just £20 more tax per year I could run a 4.6 V8!!

Well I had a 02 m3 convertible that I sold 8ish months ago for £21000 sooooo happy I did because I could now get the same car anything between £14000/£16000 now Thats bad the new tax bands are putting alot of people of.

Give it 6 months and I might get anouther for about half of what I sold my old one for.

Not a chance of that happening as their raw components would make them worth lots more than that.
