Default Confused - what to do?

I was selling my car so had the plate put on retention, the other car i was buying fell thru so thought i'd keep mine, i rang dvla and they said i can cancel the retention but i will lose £25 and will only get £80 back, so i'm now thinking, shall i take the plate off, or leave it on?

For got to say, my insurance company are going to charge me £25 if i have my plate taken off for new paperwork for the original plate
