Default E39 M5, E46 M3, 911 996 or RS4?

After recieving a payrise at work and expecting a nice bundle of cash in the next couple of weeks, I'm looking to get rid of the family wagon and get something sportier.

4 Cars on the short lists atm:

E39 M5
E46 M3
996 911
RS4@2000/1

Am looking to spend@ £18K and it must be able to seat 2 nippers in the back.

Any views on the above cars?

If you can afford it a V8 RS4 is my choice out of that lot(not sure what they are worth in UK now??). Misano Red Avant.....

But if it's a V6 RS4 then I would go M5, only due to the 996 not really being able to seat 2 kids, the back seats aren't really seats......

I've driven the M5 and didn't find it that good. The example that I drove suffered from throttle stiction and the gearbox was quite notchy.

Might try a different example though.

Also its will be the v6 twin turbo RS4.

he is FAR FAR FAR too young and trendy for an M5!!!!

GREAT cars as they are, they are old mans cars.

M3 or the Audi I reckon.

That’s what is putting me off the m3 at the mo, the fact that before long will go the way of the E36 M3 (inevitably i suppose!!) I wouldn’t mind IF I could use it every day and justify the depreciation but I wont be………….it will be in the garage most of the time then all of a sudden pikeys are driving them and they are worth 5k

Its really looking like an RS6 now...............I know the porker will be slow but I am spoilt by cossie power so cant win anyway!

Test drove a 996 C4 on Sunday and its not going to be viable as there isn't enough room for the kids.

Off to see an M3 and RS4 at the weekend but the wife has started to search Autotrader for 5 series MSport diesels...looks like i'm going to have to put my foot down

PLEASE dont rule out an E60 535d sport, i would pick one of those over an E39 M5

Especially with a DMS chip...but I don't think my 18k budget will stretch to the 535 but will cover 530s

not really. i assumed that before i'd driven one and theyre actually pretty damn nippy! would probably give your CSL a good run for its money in straight line acceleration!

that being said, they have feck all rear seating so not suitable as a family wagon
