BTRDA Woodpecker Rally 2008: My Photographs
Hi all,
Not been on for a while, had computer problems at home...
I attended the Woodpecker Rally last week, and it was a good day out. I missed Andy Burton, his Pug Cosworth set on fire, so no pics of him
I do however have a good selection of the high end entrees which you can see on my website: http://www.djaphoto.co.uk/media/main.php?g2_itemId=1599
A few of my fav's are below, but I do admit I think the older cars have alot more to give the Rally spectator when it comes to entertainment
I hope you like my pics. They were all taken using a Nikon D50, Sigma 70-300mm and shot in RAW.

Think Gary was 6th in class in the 1400's
The 200 numbers run ahead of the main field as you know
Get up earlier next time
1st time out in a brand new built car so he was cautious but doing ok.
Radnor is fun

That's good going Nuts, I would have been earlier but it was my Birthday and had been out for drinks the night before lol
Paulo: Cheers mate. I shoot RAW because it allows me to get the images home and then have better access to editing them as a pose to shooting JPEG where they are processed in-camera using what the camera 'assumes' looks correct exposure wise.
Shooting RAW allows me to make the final decision as to how it should be exposed. I can add light, change shadow contrast to bring out detail that could have been otherwise lost is shot in JPEG and other fancy little things that help make a good picture.
It's something that once you grasp, you will never do without lol
(just make sure if you shoot lots, then get plenty of memory!!!)

No problem.
It's worth trying to master getting a decent shot in the first place, but using RAW allows you to get 'inside' the image yourself wheras JPEG is pretty limited as to what you can pull-back should you over or under compensate on an exposure.
Get yourself onto www.talkphotography.co.uk - plenty of good info on there

Awesome work as usual mate, them mk2s never fail to entertain
Ive just got myself a Nikon D40 which I cant wait to get out and use on a few rallies. Which lense would you recommend for that type of photography as im a newbie to all this selecting lenses. Before I was using a fuji s5800 which was so easy to set up lol.

Thanks to everyone for the comments, much appreciated
TDEzzy: Nice choice of camera mate, but I will admit to being a Nikon fan and actually not knowing alot about the D40's...lol. Is it the D40 or D40X which struggles to house certain lenses? If your camera is not restricted to only certain lenses, then I'd recommend the lens I have, Sigma 70-300mm APO DGII. It only cost me £165 and that was a good 18 months ago if not more, so the price is probably lower now.
If you have to have Nikon only lenses, then the 70-300mm from Nikon is well worth the money. If you money is no object you should be looking at some 200/400mm VR lenses from Nikon

Dan, do you go on as offical photographers/media at the events you attend ?
your pics are very good, i hope you offer them out to cover some of your costs mate, some photographers i have had photgraph my cars on rallies have reall attitude problems when it comes to showing you their work, telling you that 'they' have had to sit in the forrest all day to take a picture of your car, nothing like that fact it cost me £40k to get the car their in the forst place, so i only buy off the 'nice' photographers who will show good proofs like yours of the high res, not a tiny bloody stamp you get off some.
well done.

Westy, beleive it or not these were all shot from 3 feet of en-bankment in the forest and captured as they came into a sliding left hander. The lens length was around 300mm so in simple terms I was nowhere near them and far from putting them off or myself in any danger lol (it's all part of making the viewer think they are head-on in the action with the cars
)
Markk, thanks for the kind comments! I've sold to rally drivers in the past simply from showing my pics on website forums around the net. I don't go as an official, just turn up and look for the best locations. I do it for a hobby unlike some for a living, so I have no reason to be rude to anyone who asks for proofs or copies, if a few sales cover the cost of a new lens then great, if I get no requests then I take joy from simple sharing them on sites like this with fellow enthusiasts.
I'd love to have my images used on sites or by car owners, as it gives a real sense of acheivement, but as said, if that doesnt happen then I take great pleasure from taking them for myself and others

All my Motorsport pics have been taken using that Sigma, so you can get an idea of it's capabilities!
Good luck!
