Default Plated vs ATB Diff in a FWD car.

I've heard it said that a Plated diff is not very good in a road-car, compared to an ATB type diff.

What's the deal? I'm talking about the entire package, not just out-and-out performance.

I've just fitted a Gripper plated diff into my Clio 172 as I heard they where far superior to an ATB type diff.

Havent driven it yet so cant comment first hand but will let you know what I think of it.

Im led to believe a plated front diff will work with one wheel off the floor??
Where as a quaife ATB needs both wheels to be in contact, to have the desired effect of transfering the lost power to the wheel with more grip.

In answer to your question if your not popping a front wheel down to Tesco's your not trying hard enough and a Quaife will suffice

this is correct.

with the gripper variant you can spec the progression you want on accelleration and deceleration, even though i have driven a 3 cars with atb and one with a plated, and the plated was so much better in delivering the power when lock was applied, i.e not just in a straight line.

one of the atb's i fitted to a well known RS2000 turbo, it came brand new from quaife and was totally dangerous in the car, so much so, we took it back out and sent it back to quaife, they told us there was nothing wrong with it, but, we they could rebuild it for x amount of Ł's even though it had done 300miles tops, we declined, but strangley enough when we re-fitted it, there was no such issues, and was generally ok.

i know what my choice would be though.

For pure track work, id go plated, but for a road car the ATB works really well as it still drives fundamentally like a normal diff, doesnt make it a pain to manouvre at low speeds etc.

ITR is the best handling FWD road car ive ever driven, and these have a torque sensing geared diff (dont think its made by quaiffe but certainly seems to work the same way)
