ECU - Locking the map - legal thoughts...
First my problem...
Badly mapped Evo - in the fact the full boost is ok, cold start is shocking - really struggles to start, Boost cut at the boost spike under load in 4th and 5th. It also has launch control below 30mph which I can't turn off. Its also very rich through the whole map - maybe its been mapped on the rollers - not sure.
I purchased the car from a close mate, and he paid for it to be mapped so I don't know where I stand.
I have a mappable ECU I can't get into.
If you pay someone to map the car, are you not legally allowed to have the unlock code as its your ecu - they have locked it so it can't be changed yet they don't own it. Techincally the person who paid for this to be mapped own's the right to it surely.
From a computer background - if you pay a programmer for some code you get the code - thats the point.
I need to get into this just to tweak it to make it start and remove the boost cut, as its mapped to the car its useless to anyone else anyway.
So where do i stand to try and get this ecu unlocked so i can fix the bad area's of the map.
Do I take it back and get the problems fixed - but then do i trust the person who mapped it to do this as it should have been done originally.
Anyone know ?

LOL....
Now i understand the copyright of the map but i aint interested in giving to anyone anyway - don't even know anyone with an m800 ecu'd evo LOL
Its very frustrating....

sadly i think, that there is no way you will get the code, and they have all the rights, as they are protection their map
which is fully understandable
it's just fooking shit they have mapped a car so bad, and want some to pay AGAIN to fix THIER issues

As Spiky says, perfectly legal, in fact manufacturers do it all the time.
You are paying them to make your car go well (in theory, lol), not to hand over the answer how to do so.
Its their data, you are merely paying to use it.
Thats my understanding of it, and there are plenty of parellels in the world of programming that you mention, if I buy a copy of word I dont get the source code to go with it.

Can you not send the ECU back to the manufacturer to remove the password? They will normally do this but send it back without the map, you could then get the job done properly by Karlos.
the ibiza is on dta managment and in the handbook is clearly states that legally the mapper doesnt have to supply the pin number to get in the ecu
It says its so he can protect his development information with his own private code
deffo a good development if its mapped shite

I work for a software consultancy, we do both, sometimes we write an application and then tailor it to an individual customers needs and they do not own it, we do, they just own the right to use it, and sometimes they pay for our time on an hourly basis and own anything we write.
In the case of a map, you are paying for them to tailor it to your car, but you havent paid for them to develop it in the first place.
So much as it sucks, Im sure they are legally allowed to lock it.

The tuner is licensing the use of his calibration. To protect the license, the maps are locked. It's pretty simple. I'm sure you can get the ECU 'reset', as in re-flashed/cleared, allowing fresh calibration?
Have you tried posting about your situation on the Motec forum?

It is password protected, what do I do?
The previous tuner will have entered this password. The best way is to contact the previous tuner to ask if the password can be removed. If this is not possible, you can send the ECU/Dash Logger to us, and we will remove the password. However this involves the configuration file being lost.
Bugger!

DOH
I can get the password off the ecu easily enough - reseting the motec is this...
Downgrade it - upgrade it - empty map
Chip - going on the application - the motec software is the application and i don't want the source code for that. If i pay a design company for a logo - you get the logo..
Funny thing is when we fit the new turbo in the coming months Karl doesn't want any of the existing map so its going to be wiped anyway - its just in the time being.
What license ? lost me there....
In my job I do bespoke config's for firewalls - i never lock them....
Its just so frustrating....

Dingy, the data on the map IS what the copyright applies to, that is what they have developed, a set of data not an application.
Much like if you buy a name and address database its licensed data too.

If the map is that bad, why are you worried about wiping the ECU?
Just wipe it and get Karl to work his magic, job done.
Tuners spend alot of time researching mapping methods and to leave it unlocked to be splashed around all over the place is just not an option and we all know that people who have access to their map will gladly send them round for everyone to use.

ecu's are often locked to prevent you going else where having it altered or altering it yourself blowing it up,then returning it back to the original tuners map and then blaming him for the blow up
why didn't your mate take it back when it ran shite after mapping,or was it ok and has developed a run fault
surely you would have noticed it was not running right when you bought it and reduced the purchase price, or do you just like moaning roflol
