Default cosworth fans, abs and turbo pipe

having bother with a few electrical gremlins on my 1990 2wd saph, the fans dont work, ive replaced the fan switch but no joy.the horn has stopped working,it died a death and now the yellow abs light stays on,could it be that it needs a set of brake pads or something else.before also the turbo steel water pipe broke,so i had it welded up,but i bought a new pipe, that broke clean in half when i was driving it so i put the welded one back on,now that has broken,is that a sign the turbo damper is goosed?

Just get a bit of stainless steel pipe from metal suppliers, I use this and for the bottom one that rots as well, about £2/3.
For fans as said, but best bet is to junk the wiring and make a sub loom up, quick cheap easy, but reliable.

As Tab says the fan wiring is rubbish and eventually the fuse box (end one) melts. Regards the horn, is the relay clicking in the fuse box when the horn is pressed? You should be able to hear it.

Turbo damper shouldn't be your problem but I think Graham Goode does a repair kit with the correct washers etc. It shouldn't all be locked solid but that happened to my 2wd saff once. You could hear a roughness in the cabin and I thought initially that it was the gearbox - change of damper washers solved it but Ford don't supply them anymore I think I've read here somewhere.

Best of luck mate

PS on my rs500 I made a sub loom for the fans but used the original wiring to fire up a warning light on the dash - just in case a fuse blew and i didn't spot it.

i had to make up a sub loom for my fans as well. i used an abs relay box from a saab 900. it has 2 relays and fuse holders built in a nice small watertight package. used the stock fan switch to control both relays and ran separate leads to each fan with their own fuses. so if one blows, the other will still power on.

Assuming that the ABS sensors are OK, do the brakes work normally? If so it would point to something slightly more obscure like the level sensor. I can send you over a guide on how to test the entire system if you like...

I saw it mentioned on another thread that the Escort Cosworth fans draw less current if you are sticking with the original type wiring. Also, I think Stu at MSD does a different switch which means the fan cycles more but the cycles are shorter than with the stock switch which means the wiring etc doesn't get as hot.

phew, what a lot of replies,i was at a show and was speaking to somebody when i heard a horn in distress,i looked round to see that 1 of my friends had jumped in my car(drunk)and started blasting the horn,it died a slow death but it was quite funny so i laughed.i bought a braided water pipe last night off of ebay, you could say there is a rough sounding noise when you give it some stick, might be the damper,i have a t34 to go on so ill check it out beforehand.melnei engineering do a damper for around £60,thinking of buying it.ill check the fuse tonight,i didnt think it would be on a fuse so i never bothered looking!cheers, lee
