Default Anyone fitted 4x4 lights/rear panel on a E reg Saff?

Somone must have done this and know the answer!

A mate of mine is trying to fit 4x4 rear lights and the rear panel to his early RWD Saff. It does not fit due to the angle of the rear which is different to later ones.

A couple of people have suggested using the hatchback rear panel, which made sense as it looks a lot straighter, however, after getting hold of one it seems too wide!

Put up a post in the Cosworth room and thought we got it but clearly not.

Any one got a definate answer?

Cheers

Make sure he hasn't bought/been given rear light lenses off a hatchback as these are slanted, and Sapphire ones aren't.

The black number plate surround will need the captive bolts removing, unless you want to cut holes in the panel, then mount it with double-sided foam tape, and secure it by screwing the number plate on.

He's removed the captive bolts and they are 100% defo genuine 4x4 rear lights. Is this what you used?

Yep - need to be Sapphire ones or they will look slanted when they're fitted because the panel they bolt up to on the hatchback are vertical like the Sapphire, however, the lenses are slanted on the hatchback to match the shape of the bodywork.

You'll also find that there are two slightly different shapes for Sapphire rear panels - one has a slanted lip at the bottom below the number plate, and one has a horizontal lip below the number plate.

The lights are 100% saloon lights and fit flush. I am aware the hatch lights slant another mate had some fitted on a Saff awhile back.

Its the back panel that does not fit properly, it appears too wide. As you stated, they are different shapes which is why he has gone for the hatch rear panel.

The two are the same width....something strange there methinks. I'll whip some pics of mine up.

Here's mine with the panel:

Here's mine without the panel:

You can see it doesn't quite fit right because the tiny slant below the number plate makes it look odd - rear panels after 89 (ie 4x4's) have a horizontal lip which allows the panel to fit better.

So you can 'make' it fit.

We met someone at a car event that had a straight line under the plate, and we were told it was from a hatchback version.

So he's bought them and they dont fit with the 4x4 lights

hatch lights and number plate surround are different to a saf

if you have a hatch light it will sit further in than a saf ight should

also te hatch number plate surround is really thin compared to a saf on and doesnt have a lip on the top like a saf does
