speak to www.Nestle.co.uk as the standard Cadbury engine/gearboxes/chassis/everything will need upgrading for 500hp

Mate had several issues with the box in his 280-300bhp WRX. Mind you PTS did the work on it at the time

well the main problem with them is there is a metal gromit which holds the clutch arm in and falls out and the arm vibrates and then brakes. all hell breaks loose then, seen main shafts break as bits of clutch are arm go every were. The STI ones are good for well over 300 bhp

mines about 300ish and gets a PROPER pasting when ever it can,,, done 20 laps of the ring and im known for my shitting gear changes and mines still running ok

think you need to look when you get to 350+,,,,,, though that said mine was rebuilt 18 months ago before i bought it pmsl

think uprated boxes are around 1500 quid anyway so not a major deal IMO

I seen a WRX scooby estate get RR'd at 434bhp/488lbft the other day, Chatting to the guy, said it was a standard box!

Going for a PPG one as soon as it lets go, But as Jonnyb says, the clutch arm shakes, makes funny noises and breaks... just like this was.

Shame, as it fucking FLEW!

Holy feck! That box will last 2 seconds. The classic shape impreza gearboxes are all weak...even the Sti, which will only handle 350 at the most. Best telling your mate to get himself a newage Sti box from a breakers - they are much stronger, think they can handle over 450 no probs.

on the sti type ra model using the diff control to leave it in rwd and drifting/donutting it will destroy the drivetrain in a week...

A lot depends on how you drive it, but I guess it isnt far wrong saying they are on par with an MT75.

Ive seen cars survive with 400bhp on a standard box, and others destroy one in very swiftly with a little over standard.
I broke my old Legacy box one night.....although sidestepping the clutch at 7000rpm in 1st gear....well, I guess I shouldnt have expected otherwise

It was wet though lol

Usually power munches 3rd gear. STI style boxes are stronger than earlier ones. the casing was beefed up a bit, and I think the bearings inside. Gears...paople say theya re the same, but they do seem to withstand a little more power.

As for the shaft Johnny mentioned. Ive never seen or heard of thet problem before, and Ive been around hundreds of Subarus.
I can only assume that problem is a result of idiots changing the clutch. As the shaft is located in place and secured by a large threaded plug, which is usually very tight. Almost impossible for it to come out under normal operation, more so as its right beside the starter motor.

If your friend is upgrading the power to that level, and is concerned about the box....cheapest strong solution is to throw a new model 6 speed in there, It will take 500bhp no problem.

PPG's are strong, and expensive.....but every race meet I hear of, some break.

Good luck to him building a 500bhp Subaru engine on a budget because 2 of my friends have spent in excess of £10k each building 500bhp engines for their Subarus!

As Steve says the best way to get a cheap reliable box is to fit the 6 speed unit, thius is what my 2 friends run

500bhp on a budget will be easy,if you have a budget of £10k

Incidently, it has been know for the later wrx 02> gearboxs to hold, if driven sypatheticaly 420 bhp,but if driven in anger, well how longs a piece of string.
Sti's should be a little better but i wouldnt like to say for how long or how much bhp.

In fact matey,i would take a look at this thread, having owned a scoob and being a member of scoobynet, these arent talking crap.
