Getting a PC to auto-login to a network?

My set up is as follows;
NAS server with intergrated wired router and wireless access point
PC upstairs (wired)
Media PC downstairs (wired)
Laptop (wireless)
Now, I hold all my music, video and pictures on my NAS server's internal drive.
In it's settings is the option to give the user group a password, which I decided to try, then thought better of it. For some strange reason, you have to enter an * as the password to remove the password. I did this and now it thinks that * is the password
Anyway, everytime I boot up either my upstairs PC or media PC, to access the NAS server via either Explorer folders, or when opening Meda Player (who's library is attributed to the files on the NAS) I have to "login" to the NAS by entering the user group name and * as the password! This is very annoying!
I recently got a laptop, and after setting it up for access to the network, I attempted to login to it. I had to enter the user group name and * as the password - but then below the password box was a check box to "REMEMBER PASSWORD" which I checked. Now everytime I boot up the lappy, it automatically locates my wireless network, logs on to get internet access, and auto logs in to my NAS server aswell. Brilliant!
Question is - how do I make the other two PC's do this! Prior to the NAS server having * as the password, they always just logged straight in with no login window - click MY NETWORK PLACES, the folders were there and BAM, you're in (or click on one of the mapped network drives, either way worked fine) Neither of them, when I try to login show the checkbox for remembering the password! And I have to type the user group name and * as the password everytime!
How do I make it work?

Bring up a command prompt and type 'net use x: \\ip_of_nas\share_on_nas /savecred' (without the '')
eg, net use x: \\192.168.0.20\stuff /savecred
(assuming the ip and share name on the nas).. it'll then prompt you for the username, then the password..

I go START > MY COMPUTER > and click on one of the mapped network drives (I mapped 4 folders to drive locations.
Or I go to START > MY NETWORK PLACES > and click on one of the folders on the NAS
Or START > MY NETWORK PLACES > SHOW WORKGROUP COMPUTERS > and click on the NAS drive icon
Or I go to START > MY NETWORK PLACES > and click on one of the folders on the NAS
Or START > MY NETWORK PLACES > SHOW WORKGROUP COMPUTERS > and click on the NAS drive icon

Right, screen grab of that;

Which is odd, cos all those listed ARE available and not disconnected!

Right, ok.. What you need to do is disconnect them all in my computer (right click each drive and choose disconnect) and then do the following..
open up a command prompt as before..
Type the following commands...
net use w: \\mattloaf\pictures /savecred
net use x: \\mattloaf\files /savecred
net use y: \\mattloaf\video /savecred
net use z: \\mattloaf\music /savecred
It will ask you for the username and then password.. so enter the user name and then the password when it prompts you.. you should only get prompted for it for the first one above, the other 3 will just re-use the same credentials..

Okay, I remapped the network drives to the original drive letters, rebooted and then tried to open one - was greeted with the login again
But this time it had preinstalled the user group, all I had to do was input the password and hit enter... So that's progress I guess..... Half way there

Going to bed now as puters are doing my head in - will tackle this again 2morrow

Both Desktop PC's still require me to input password when trying to access either a mapped network drive or folder (of the NAS) from the My Network Places folder, or when trying to access the NAS network computer icon from WORKGROUP COMPUTERS

The mapped drive is there. After booting up the PC, I can see the mapped drive(s). When I click on one to open it, it asks me to put in the password before I can access it.
I don't want to do this, I want it to autoremember the password..... But it won't autoremember it - even after doing all the things you said with the command prompt thing....

I don't know then, I have a media centre which accesses file shares in a similar fashion across my network and /savecred has always saved the day for me. Probably worth googling your problem a bit and see if anyone else has the same issue.

I googles and googled untill googles servers crashed
No avail!
It just doens't make sense why there isn't the "remember password" check box on the log in box. There was one on my laptop when I installed XP so I checked it and it's been fine. Don't really wanna have to reinstall the OS on both PC's to get it to autologin...

It's probably some stupid option in XP, like if you don't have fast user switching turned on you can't remember passwords, or some local security policy item. My money is on something daft like that.
