If its the orig ones then they are mechanically really good,
Main problem is rust, mostly found under the mat/carpet in the boot.
CHECK THAT AREA!!! trust me, also the rear seatbelt mounts at the arch/doors can get rust near them, chassis can rust and the arches and door bottoms can get bubbly as well.
If its a good one then a decent wax oil done professionally then it will halt any rust and boost life expectany of the car by years.
Is it a petrol or v8? you can get 200tdi and 300tdi turbodiesel engines, both are good and a decent intercooler and pump tweak can get an extra 25bhp from them.

if the chassis is mint and the rust is minimal then a good wax oil will do wonders, and its not expensive either.
Parts for them are buttons, check the landrover mags to see just how cheap they are. oil filters for about £4 etc

If it has sun roofs, watch as they can sometimes leak and that doesnt help the floorpan as it gets a bit rusty

it should be a 300 tdi wich is the better engine of the two well more powerfull anyway. as above realy have a good look at the boot floor and rear door shuts
other than that they are pritty good. second gear will clip on most on the way down
if it don't it's good but not a bother realy just change a bit slower lol. parts are sooo
cheap for them now a full poly bush set is about £60 a bit of a pain to do but worth the money.

prone to headgaskets and the p gasket leaks as well on most of them. as like any other landrover the swivel houseings will leak oil. but they are as tuff as boots. i miss my disco

Yeah, I had one. Great motors! (mine was a 300TDi). Have been looking at them on Ebay again funnily enough - fancy another one!
Getting cheaper by the day, bit pricey to fill up though - think mine used to take about £70 to fill it up - and that was at 2004 prices!

You've an odd idea about what consitutes a 'runaround'.
Most folk would be after something small and efficient.
Cant beat a disco though - and folk get out of your way too. No-body wants to be on the receiving end of a 2 ton landy.

disco,s....hmmm well get a good one and you are fine....but they are few and far between, i have 7 here i am breaking and 3 of them are 1996..feckin rotters, look for rot on boot floor inner and outer sills, inner wings, all body mounts, chassis, rear inner arches near seatbel mounts, basically every where!, i,m building a shortened one (bobtail) and i started off with a good shell but have still had to replace boot floor, inner and outer sills and inner wings as they were all showing signs of rot starting

but i am a fussy cnut LOL

I've recently bought a 3.9 v8 auto and love it tbh, paid under £1k for it with 9months mot, chassis and boot floor is solid, but apart from the rear sunroof being siliconed in and a slight niggle with engaging reverse i think i got a bargin. few things didn't work initailly, but everything so far as been dead easy fixes.
obviously it handles nothing like a car, BUT you can chuck it into bends quicker than you think it it holds the road quite well for a vehicle of it's size imho. sounds ace aswell, does about 15mpg though, abusing it off road you can half that. but it's not a car i bought for long distance driving so don't really care tbh.
