Ive decided that I need to drag myself kicking and screaming into the 1990s in terms of det detection rather than keep messing around with manual det cans as its a pain in the arse in some cars to bolt them in and out etc.

Recomendations please on a good "hobby" setup?

Cant be arsed to make something, have a budget of a couple of hundred quid I guess, just want to click "buy" on something and it turn up, rather than piss around making things.


What are people on here using?

They are pretty good, i used them for years, but we have a better set available now Nick.

 

just seen it stu looks much better suited to specific knock detection frequencies rather than general noise monitoring like the ones i posted

 

They certainly are mate, and the cans are EXCELLENT, really good at drowning out other noise.

Its something with a specific knock frequency slant that im after, as I believe it will make it easier for me to hear knock on engines im not familiar with, on an XE or a YB I know what the engine normally sounds like so am fairly confident I can hear even relatively mild knock on my manual cans, but on an engine ive never heard before, id be less confident, if that makes sense?

I've yet to try an electronic set that is anywhere near as good as mechanic detcans so i'm keen to have a listen to these

 

I have a sealey setup thats fine - but like stu says there are better things

 

I have a non electrical set and can pick out det over valve train noise all day long on any of the car engines i've mapped. Cost me Ł20 because i think you really need some quality ear defenders rather then the B&Q five quid ones.

Hey Chip, funny you should say this, as mine is now ready to be messed about with if you are still interested!

it starts and drives ok, the map just needs messing about with to make it drive smooth.

 

A mate of mine made a set for about Ł20, I was really impressed with how well they worked tbh.

He robbed the guide off the net iirc, I'll try and find out where it came from

Personally prefer mechanical over electrical, though like you have mentioned find fitting mechanical system a pain especially when car has no opening windows through which to feed pipe!

 

Yes I find that on cars with perspex windows

Cant put it through the door shut like you can a wire cause it gets crushed!

Transmits almost only knock to the cans.

The only thing that bothers me with these is what if it blocks something you should be hearing?.. At least with mechanical cans you hear everything and in all fairness the human brain is about the best audio filter you can get!

Stu, I'd imagine it's pretty important where you attach the knock sensor for optimum results and the optimum position is likely to vary from engine to engine?

Havent had a chance to do any mapping with them yet, but the headphones look and feel top quality etc, quite looking forward to it.

Do you sell extra sensors so I can leave them bolted on in some of the cars I play with more often, or better still are they (as they look) bosch ones as found in an astra gte etc but with a tail, in which case I could use those and make up a subloom so that I dont have wires hanging about?

 

No idea pal, but part number should still be on them so you can buy from Bosch suppliers.

 

Couldnt see a partnumber on it when I looked.

Ill do some other tests, like resistance, to make sure its safe to the device to use, and then see if they seem to be the same from that, and then try swapping for a bosch one and see if it still functions the same.

So FAR better for leaving connected to an engine than the type that comes with it with a tail on it.

 

Interestingly, mine ARE bosch ones with a part number, so not sure what has changed spec wise, but the item used on mine is 0261 231 183.

Very easy to use, and very good.

Self powered via a 9v battery, so less cables to mess about with. High quality knock sensor and connectors etc...
I would highly reccomend it. I was almost about to buy the Knockbox, but then this appeared on the scene.

Ive also used Link's Knockblock, which works well too. Its messier, and more suited to a permanent install. the Link also has a 0-5v output based on knock detect too, which is handy for logging.

 

I use these and my manual det cans, and swap betweeen the two.


The only thing i dislike with the Sealey item, is it hasn't got a Freq filter, can these be brought on its own, and made to fit the sealey?
