Default 2008 Cosworth Sunbeam

Hello folks,

I thought I'd put up some pics of this years Sunbeam following a complete ground up rebuild over winter. We'll be at the RSOC Croft day and at TOTB if you want to see the car in action. We're doing charity rides at croft if anyone fancies a passenger ride.

Here's some pics:

Looks awesome Karl!" Last time I saw it run was ND 07' at Rockingham!

What's the power estimate for this year, more than last? Isn't it 600bhp+!?

Absolutely love this car too .

If I am there, I will certainly be booking a ride .

Just noticed that it has a K&N filter instead of your usual ITG foam one? Any reason for the change?

Stunning as always Karl, and I'm sure it'll be showing a clean pair of heels to most of the other cars on track.............Brilliant.

M5 is still keeping me entertained, and Maxest is still devoloping the Cosworth. All is well.

It's running around 540bhp for this year, a little up on last year, but the main differences are in the rev band. It's running the same short stroke bottom end as I use in my own car which means 9000rpm upper limit. As it comes on boost at 3800rpm it gives a HUGE power band which is essential for hill climbing and sprints where the car normally competes.

Mike, we had to change to the K&N due to technical issues with the ITG. Normally I have the ITG filters made with an internal plastic mesh to keep the foam cylinder rigid, however due to lack of room this was left out of the foam which promptly resulted in the filter collapsing on boost! Hence for now we're running the K&N until we can find a better solution.

Chip, I have no clear photos inside the rear arches, but in essence we trimmed the outer skin to the inside radius of the extended arch and then extended the inner arch to meet with the trimmed outer skin. The arches are aluminium and then rivoted onto the trimmed arch. This gives room for 10 inch wheels and up to 260mm wide tyres. Incedentally we had these new alloy arches made 1 inch wider than normal Group 4 lotus arches to give us some extra room.

Jim, glad to hear you're doing fine, but you must be getting bored of your Bavarian tourer!

Hi Neil,

Hope you're enjoying your "vacation" in Oz. Are you missing home yet?

Yeah Paul is very pleased with the result, we've chosen such a nice colour for it, modern yet suits the retro look!!

Despite the 9000rpm upper limit, do you actually use this? I only ask, as mine was engine dynoed to 8500rpm, but for engine longevity it has been rev limited to 8200rpm. So I was just wondering if you regularly use the upper reaches of yours, or if it is just where it is "safe" to? If you do regularly use the upper limits, what are your views on how often you feel it prudent to top and tail such a rev monster?

I knew there would be a reason for the filter change - as I know you normally prefer the ITG ones. I hope the collapse didn't damage the turbo . When mine injested part of the panel filter that got nicked in the airbox lid last year, it fucked the impellor PROPER .

Hi Neil,

Yes I'll sort you a ticket for TOTB. We must get the astra sorted once you get back!

Mike,

Amazingly yes Paul does use all the rev band all the time! It's normally soft cut at 8800 and 9000 rpm hard. I'm sure you'll see yourself first hand if you get a ride out at croft with him! Paul loves the revs, and engine loves them even more!

With regards to engine freshening, we have found the engine to be reliable at these revs with no real issues as such. We do however change the exhaust valves regularly, but as its a competition car, I doubt it sees more than 2000 hard miles a year, though it does admittedly live a very hard life. I would be a fool to think it will survive indefinatly, but so far the rpm issue has caused no problems.
