Default Subaru Impreza

just a few questions for anyone that knows

If you had £5k-£10k what one is worth going for?

Is a "P1" the prodrive scooby? Whats so good about it?

Did certain models have better engines? (as in the joke of chocolate pistons etc lol)

Is it better to go for an import than a UK model?

quite a few people now have said go for a RA is that a good choice?

any info would be great

thanks

Rob

Quickest out of the box for that money is probably the STi Type R and they have relatively strong engines provided they are looked after.

For bang for your buck, i'd have a Type R over the P1 all day long. They don't suffer as badly from the air flow meter problems and they're a damn sight cheaper.

A P1 is up there with EVO 6 Tommi for being the most over-priced Jap car out there.

Yeah, P1 has the Prodrive goodies, but these can also be fitted as options to UK Turbos.

I'm selling my STi Type R due to not getting to use it as I'd like too. It's just used for going back and forward to work at the mo.

RA's with closed-deck red-tops are just as good as the Type R in many ways, but the 4 doors are too common IMO.

2 Door Scoobs look so much better too.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

JK

the p1 apparently has problems with engines about 60/70k.

i would get a type r v4/v5 as they have the better interior(later clocks).
great fun!

Some P1s have had their engines changed I think due to a defect so if you do decide to go for one, look at their mileage and look to see if it has been changed. Don't know whether it's the entire engine though or just the block/head.

yeah it is, limited edition of 300 as well

funny though, to insure that through direct line you have to have a tracker fitted but not on a 2003 sti type uk !

i bought a uk 2000 turbo (classic shape), not as powerful as an import but not as expensive to insure as an import either.. still i think its a great car out of the box and still plently of tuning options availible, only thing is the 2000 tubos have a weak maf sensor which means no cone filters. recently replaced mine for £85ish from the stealers

Without a doubt id go for the v4/5 type r which i have over the P1.....i had a P1 and loads have gone bang at 40k....not the best engine in the world and mine was on 39k so i sold it.
Now have a 98 type r with loads of goodies and what a car......much stronger engine and drivetrain than the P1 too......The P1 imo feels quite refined compared to the type r plus you get all the standard jap gismos like intercooler spray and adjustable centre diff on the R.

6-7k will get you a pukka one too

heres mine

that is classed as a classic shape 3door type r, if your searching type sti and will bring up some that may have not been put on as type r(ie on ebay or autotrader)

the scooby type r is gonna be my next car, id go for an evo but like 3door cars better

this is very true.....i had the 330mm prodrive upgrade which needed replacing....think the discs were £600 and the pads were £150.

Honestly mate...go for the type r...twice the car for half the money.

Have you driven a scooby yet???......i took 2 mates out who love nothing else but cossies and they were shocked at how good my car was. They very nearly got scoobs themselves

I know everyone has there own opinion but why do ppl hate scoobs so much.....not being nasty but they are twice the car than any cossie is........i drove my cossie last week after having a month in the scoob and absolutely hated it . End of the day its just a 20 year old ford sierra with a quick engine!!!!!!!!

Theres a clip on youtube of 4 japs racing 4 cars round a track....2 evos and 2 scoobs. The scoobs were just as quick round the circuit and infact 1 of them actually passed the evos.
I just dont understand why everyone seems to think the evos are so much better...coz there not.
Ive raced many evos and have never been stuffed by one on the twistys!!!!!!!!!

Being a scoob fan I'd have the equivalent scoob rather than an Evo even though my mate who had a evo 6 really turned me towards the evos but just love the scooby looks and boxer rumble!

I agree, people that just say they are crap are mad IMO.

Maybe it's down to having a bad experience with one or knowing someone who has?!

I've had loads of them and they are the most fun for the money, get a nice one that's running right and they are great cars.

I've driven loads of Imprezas, old, new, UK's, WRX's, STI's, Type R's etc.. and even to this day one of my favourites is an old Version 2 WRX (1995-96) model moded to say 280bhp?with scoobyecu, full exhaust and air filter.. absolute riot and really do hit nice and hard on acceleration for the power level.

Type R's are a bargain at the moment (like most stuff) and don't forget with the Type R (over the P1) you get DCCD.

my legacy esate is so much better to drive than my sierra in every way and thats a big heavy car. They do go into handle like a FWD car untill pushed. Mine is quick enough to see off most cars.

i love them, once the kids have fucked off will be getting somthing smaller, once you drive one you will know

i paid £6500 for my P1. considering its £34k new a reckon its alot of car for the £££££.

the engine rumours are blown way out of proportion all STI V5s had issues its jus your luck to be honest. lowest av heard a P1 gettin a replacement block is 23k and some have 130k on the clocks on their original engines. go figure!

yes typeRs are similar but the insurance is loads more. they do benefit from the jap goodies tho. a had always wanted a P1 tho since i first saw one. love the look of them they jus stand out way more than the run of the mill classics. 22B is the dad tho but way too dear!

heres ma P1 a jus love the look but its only my opinion!

The classic shape scoobs are FAR lighter than the newage ones hence are usually much quicker on the road.

The P1 is THE one to have if the money is right and as Jigga said the extras cant be added onto the UK turbo 2000's unless you want to fit the STI red top engine that comes in the P1.

drive both back to back on the road and you will see the difference ginge.

once pushed hard the STI starts to skip and loose grip due too the harder import suspension where the P1 with the prodrive UK suspension set up just walks off down the road and covers ground far more easily.

Both need a remap even in standard form IMO to be safe on uk fuels too.

6.5k for a p1? when i was looking around in dec i opted for an evo 5/6 over a p1 as i had heard horrors on engines going pop. though 6.5k sounds a fcuking bargain? i thought they were more like 10 still.

Imo i'd still go for aother evo5 or 6. theyre coming up to 10years old and they'l start flooding in the uk like the evo 4's and wrx scoobies have! hold tight and wait a few months imo! Tis what im doing in a ctr then i'll chop in buy another evo.

6.5k is a steal for a P1.

They do not have problems with the engine as they exactly the same as a V5 sti import.

The problem is the standard map its far too close to the limit on UK fuels.

They are safe enough until you fit an freer flowing exhaust and the boost raises then they go bang without a re map!

some lovely ones on here and nice prices too. ive noticed there is some good prices.

i was waiting for this thread to get the old "Their shit, chocolate pistons, etc, etc." but this has been a great help and its good to hear from people that have got/had one not Joe Bloggs had one and it blew up lol or it beat my cossie

i was going to go on scoobynet but someone asked about a P1 and had some knowledge and it was all bitchy about well at least you researched before asking. i did look about but its hard to get the answer of whats better unless its from an owner or previous owner tbh.

i know there common a muck now but there was 2 cars i wanted 1 was a S2 when i was really young and a scooby since Mcrae won with it. and it will have to be a sonic blue is it? love it love the sound. not arsed about everyone having one. i would be happy to have it for me.

just want to make sure i get the right one lol
