Default rst head bolts *final torque setting*

hi guys. Spent the last 2 weeks pretty much rebuilding my engine. Its a standard 1.6 rs turbo block. Finally got to finishing stages today but came across a glitch.. I torqued the head bolts as stated by haines (26nm and then 55nm) off the top of my head. On the first quarter turn they all became real tight. I still have another quarter turn to go but i'm pretty sure they will snap.

Does anyone know the final torque setting for the finished head bolts so i can check with my torque wrench. Thanks in advance guys.

you need a bigger bar then and bigger arms, they are stretch bolts they wont snap.

25Nm then 55Nm then 90 degrees & then a further 90 degrees.

It would take quite a lot to snap one but it is a bit worrying lol.

come on guys. I really worried and not sure what to do. Someone must know the final torque figure?

Alternatively does anybody know how much torque is increased by a quarter turn?

as aj says above, that is how you tighten them.

^^^ What they said.

If you think they feel like they are going to snap after 55nm, you wait for the 90° stages. AFPMSL.

Should have cleaned and greased the threads/washers first with proper lube, wouldn't have been half as scary!!

the proper torque setting is 90 deg, its an angular torque setting.

55nm is barely nothing, dont worry they wont snap

as said did you lube up the bolt thread and under the head of the bolt where is sits on the washer to allow it to tighten in the thread but still enough to let it move and not snap.

I torqued up to 55nm obviously with the torque wrench. Did the first 90 degree turn with a stock ratchet which is significantly smaller and they did feel bloody tight. I understand that there are 2 90 degree turns i just wandered what the final torque setting is after the 2 90 degree turns so i could check with the torque wrench to see if they already that tight.

I did grease up the bolts and i also used an old bolt in each thread prior to putting the block on to cut the crap out. Blew them out with air afterwards.

Listen. SLOWLY.

THERE IS NO FINAL TORQUE SETTING.

You have to accurately do the 2 torque stages, then the 2 90° stages. By the time you get to the angle bit, you will need a long bar and a proper angle gauge.

The last time I did my head bolts, I think I saw around 120Nm finally. The reading doesn't really go up much after the first 90 degree stage because the bolts start to stretch.
