Thinking of up grading the rear arb on my 2wd saff,is a escos one the thickest of the lot,and is it a straight replacement on a 2wd

yes mate they are all a straight swop (4b or ecose) as long as you have the appropiate bushes, i have 4b one on my saph makes a difference i think didn't go ecose cos with being 2wd i didn't want to make it to stiff and therefore scittish.

2wd is 16mm, 4wd is 18mm, escos is 22mm, and silly money s/h, hard to come by.
A SCORPIO is 21mm from a SCORPIO 24 VALVE COSWORTH, and fits straight on, the GRANADA SCORPIO COSWORTH 24 VALVE is 18mm same as 4wd cossie sapph.
The PROPER scorpio is the BUG EYE one at 21mm, just ordered one, Ł40 delivered, going to drill out the 16mm poly bushes to suit, after freezing them first of course!!

Also, just so that you can work out the relative stiffness of them, you have to apply each roll-bar size to the power of 4 .

Eg:
16mm x 16mm x 16mm x 16mm = 65536
18mm x 18mm x 18mm x 18mm = 104976
21mm x 21mm x 21mm x 21mm = 194481
22mm x 22mm x 22mm x 22mm = 234256

104976/65536 = 1.6 . Therefore an 18mm roll bar is 1.6 times stiffer than a 16mm rollbar .

It actually sounds like the 21mm one is a better compromise to the Escort one, as 1. It is cheaper and 2. It is just under three times the stiffness of the 2wd one, compared to the Escort one which is 3.5 times stiffer.

I think my best bit was freezing the poly bushes, so they can be drilled, need a VERY SHARP bit like COBALTS though.
You can also buy POLY in RODS to lathe up and make your own bushes!!

it all depends on the hardness of the urethane... i've machined it on the lathe at room temperature, but it was 80 shore. used a normall drill bit too, but i had just sharpened it. its best done with some lubricant too, as it soon burns.

and don't think you're the first to discover the scorpio ARB either although it measures more like 20mm than 21

 

I never claimed to be the first, and don't give a shit who was the first, just thought it was info others may have found usefull, so took the time out to let them know.
I don't know the exact size as do not have one in front of me to measure(yet), but of course you would need to remove the paint to get a accurate diametre.
Comments like this are why I am thinking of ditching PF.

I had a new from Ford Escos roll bar on my 4*4 Saph, made a noticeable difference for the year or so it was fitted. Also had new bushes/ brakcets at the same time.

So all the information regarding 2wd applies to us 3dr owners too?? and is the difference that noticable?? as theirs loads of scorpios in my local scrapper

No, as the 3dr rear beam mounts for the ARB are located differently, so to fit the bigger ARBs from the later cars on, you would need to weld into position the brackets from a 2wd Sapphire or 4x4 Cosworth, then it should .

 

or change the rear arms i pressume mike?
