s1 to cossie or not to cossie
hi everyone my series one shell has been sat in my garage for nearly 3 years now ive got the funds i dont know if to transplant a cossie engine & running gear into it or just restore it the floor is shot so thats whats got me thinking i love the s1 to bits but always craved for a cossie so dont know if to abanndon the s1 & get a cossie or build myself the best of both worlds any thoughts on this would be great cheers!
Personally i love the S1's, i'd rebuild it to how it should be but with sensible mods, i couldnt hack up a S1 shell
S1's are getting a bit thin on the ground these days. If you have a craving for something Cossie'd then id get me a Mk1/2 shell and build something mental from that

my s1 was rotten as a pear, and i chose to do it 100% original and stock, mostly as i was on a tight budjet.
In hindsight the amount of welding and prep i did, i should have cossied it.
unless your going to do an amazing no expense spared resto (which could set you back 10k, with paint as well) then id go for a cossie conversion.
when i sold mine, there were so many things i regreted i hadnt done as i wanted or spent as much as i could have. and this reflected the price.
I doesnt matter how clean the car is, if it hasnt got a wad of history, low miles and a distinct lack of unwelding, then it wont command a high price anyway!!
as you need to cut the floor around, you may as well make it to fit a cossie box.
there were two brothers in 'Fast ford' or performance ford a month or two back who had 2 identical S1 cossies, worth a read if you can get hold of the back issue.
and also if im honest cossie ownership is not the be all and end all. I got 10 times the buzz and excitement driving my S1 around than i do my escort cossie!
and it seemed the S1 was also more of a head turner?
heres my old girl a few months before i sold it with a few bits still to finish off like adjusting the bodykit- 3.5 years, bare metal, painted underside, weeks and weeks of welding, new front ineer wings, outer wings, front valence, crosmember, bonnet, rear arches!!!! full resto.

In fact my mk1 in the pic, id did original, i should nave put a V8 in
My 1949 beetle, i did original, i should have put a scoobie 2ltr turbo in
are you seeing a trend here
.
Please dont do what i did, i put in so much work and it was SOOOOOO clean, i ended up not driving it!!! wack in a cossie lump and abuse the old girl!!!

At the risk of sounding like a weirdo in light of that car shagging program the other night, that VW looks the nuts
Back on topic, bearing in mind ive spent the last 18-24 months pissing about with a Mk3 bodyshell but not doing a RWD conversion and its only just gone for paint, i wouldnt bother unless:
1. You are very competent at that kind of thing and can do all the fabrication in a matter of weeks, or:
2. You have a LOT of spare time, even more patience, and bugger all else to do!
Personally looking back at my project, i shouldnt have done it. I should have just bought a car already prepped and ready to go in the drive format i want (RWD
) and been out doing trackdays already. Not stood on the sidelines watching my mates have all the fun whilst i spend hour after hour in the garage with an angle grinder
At least i can rest in the knowledge that it will be exactly as i want it when its done

yeah ive got that issue thats what gave me the idea im confident i can do it as i do welding & fabrication for a living but for looks ive always liked the s1 this is my second one but like i said always craved the cossie power so i suppose im answering my own question in a way but just wanted peoples thoughts on it as i know messing with a series one is highly fround upon in the rs owners world lol.
