Default oil pressure

my mates 2wd cossie has just started to lose oil pressure on tickover its down to about 30 psi but when he gives it some it down to 20 this is at tickover but as soon as you drive it its about 55 all the time even after giving it some any ideas the engine had a freshen up about 4000 miles ago new rings and shells do you think pump is on its way out its a grahame goode uprated item if that helps also only 4000 miles ago. recent oil change no bits of metal inside any help cheers

the pressure at idle aint that important as long as you do have some.

55 psi on normal driving sounds healthy to me

I race my Sapph with similar pressure. It sits at 20 on idle, rises to 55-60 as I rev it and holds 55-60 during use. On idle it steadily falls back to 20ish. It was at Grove Garage recently and they didn't comment. As far as I'm concerned that's normal.

they dont sell a complete pump its just the internal part you have to have your old cover machined to fit

when i put silkolene in mine the pressure dropped at idle. when the motor was stripped, crank, shells and pump were perfect

as above when i switched to pro s idle pressure was lower when cold to mobile 1, but was consistantly better when warm.

Also made the tappets alot noiser's when cold, but silent when warmed up a bit and pumped around

Was your tappets quiet when cold before you changed oil mate?

Mine are quiet from cold then chatter away when hot on the Mobil 1. Was gonna change them along with the cam bearing etc to get the head quiet again.

yeah my oil pressure is 50 PSI on tickover when cold on Mobile 1, drops to just below 20 when warm though, need a better warm idle pressure so it may help then..

mine was never that low on idle, unless i had given it a serious serious thrash, and then would be around 25.

Also my cold pressure was more like 60-65

paul, yeah the tappets were silent before, might jsut be a shitty tappet but there were brand new.

Sorry to drag this up.

Mines usually 60 ish at cold start and 50ish when warm and driving gently, rising to 55-60 when revving, and 35 on idle.

Tonight gave it a bit of beans and it dropped to 30 when idling but then climbed back to 35 as usual.

I take it this is normal, it was just a bit warm??

yeah that's fine; idle PSI isnt as important as the PSI when reved - alot of gauges arent accurate tho and when people install gauges they worry they have low oil pressure

Has to be taken in context as well.
Idle psi with what oil spec:
Cold idle with 5, 10 or 15 ?????????
Hot idle with 40, 50, 60 ???????

Lower viscosity = Lower pressure

ford spec with 10w 50 is 1.8 bar at idle at 80c oil temp. you could try a 10w 60 that should give better hot pressure. i dont thnik youve got anything to worry about though at 20 psi.

my dropping oil pressure turned out to be a screwed engine!! but i was also loseing pressue when reving not just on idle. looked at the back of my rocker and the powdercoat has been burning off and blistering due to head heat so not much cooling going on!!

That's hot idle for mine - it was a psi less at 108
Normally about 32/33 at 80
