Default advice on cometic head gaskets,

i need a new head gasket for my coz, i was going to just put another grp a one on but ive seen some
cometic reuseable wrc type multilayer foam /steel headgaskets,
now , i can get these in 1.42 mm compressed thickness which apparently will lower my c/r or i can get one in standard thickness, i have a escoz 200 block in my car witha 4wd head and am going greys/t34 etc, is the 1.42mm thick one a good gasket to get and what c/r will it give, i have heard a few have had a prob with cometic but dont know if thats early ones or are they all dodgy?
cheers
carl

How do the cometic gaskets damage a head and block??

How do the newer type differ to prevent this??

Damo V by installing them incorrectly Its all about lining therings up..ideally they need to be installed with engine out of car!...They later ones are apparently fixed rings???Not sure though as i aint seen one yet..i run the older one obviously installed correctly

Strut brace go for a cometic .57 this should lower the comp by .9

It put a mark in both my head and my block from where the gasket rings were faulty

Fortunatly Karl managed to strip both down and get it sorted pretty quickly

I have one 'in stock' for when I build my replacement engine, how do I know if I have the faulty design/old one or the newer one.

Phil, surely if you were to use long studs and a cometic it would stay put as you torque the head down? What makes fitting it out of the car so different to when it's in the car.

(I can't believe I'm asking Phil for tuning advice )

Yep...now that makes it far easier..i did mine incar cause of Long stud.....i mentioned do it out of car because not everyone agrees with long studding

Now i used std head studs using a coppers ring gasket (seperate fire rings) fitted INCAR twice and both failed!!!!!!..IF i'd gone with DIY it wouldnt of happened as i would have used ARP's BUT i foolishly listed to someone else

But, when you put the head back on, you use two/four locators, isn't that enough for the gasket to stay in place ? How would long studs/arp's make a difference

By locators I mean four old headbolts with the head cut off and a slot at the top.
I've only ever done one h/g on a cossie and used that... Seems to make sense to me as you are about to drop 20kg's worth of head on a cylinder block, usually holding it at arm's length. What chance does the h/g have of staying in place otherwise

Ginge, I have no doubts he would have, if he had known, or, if we had known to ask him.
I am in no way suggesting he would have waylaid us... and wouldn't hold it against him if it was the old one (as long as he didn't know otherwise)
