Got in the car to drive home, it started fine but a very odd grinding/metalic noise carried on!
I turned the key to stop the engine straight away and the noise stopped, BUT the engine kept trying to turn over and fire, but not start!
I turned the key to get the dash lights back on and it restarted, but with the strange noise again.
The engine sounded perfect and normal as ever, so im certain it wasnt anything to do with that.
It revved fine so all i could was try to get it home. The orange ABS light was on and didnt go off. I had to stop at a aroundabout for a min or so due to busy traffic and then got a burning smell which was similar to a burnt out motor. Another mile and it suddenly stopped, then the ABS light went straight out too. Drove home without any other noise or incident.
When i to the top of my road i thought id try it again to see what was going on. Turned the key and nothing! The dash lights went dim and that was it. Starter not even spinning or clicking. It was only 3 weeks old and put on after the rebuild, so i can only guess it was a faulty one.
Would it be possible for the starter to cause it to turn over after the key was taken out if it was faulty?
Any ideas??
<< real tears!!

The grinding noise wasnt anything like the sound of a starter spinning though, it was alot rougher and more random sounding. I do thinking it was the starter, just never heard a noise like it before, probably totally fucked inside
