data protection springs to mind!!!!!!!!!!!-----how do you propose to infiltrate insurance company files/???????-----you are boardering on illegal activities here-
if this concerns an accident deal with insurures /police,
no details regarding personel insurance detals should be published here

Aaron is actually correct, read the disclaimer on AskMid - if not checking your own vehicle you ARE committing an offence

and what reason would you have for checking to see if your own vehicle was insured? unless your some sort of idiot who cant remember what they do on a daily basis then its purely a legal disclaimer to cover their own arses not really the ones using the site..

Fuzzy, not arguing with you lol - I just pointed out after someone said the other chap was wrong, that he wasn't.

Obviously they put the site online knowing people would use it to check if other people are insured (if that gets uninsured drivers off our roads, then it's no bad thing) - that doesn't change the legal side of things in any way.

Also, for private insurance customers, the insurance agent/company are legally responsible for updating the database - not all insurance companies are very effective at doing this in the required timeframe, which could lead to unecessary difficulties if you're stopped by the police...

my appologies mate ,it wasnt meant to sound like an argument more a question as to what purpose are they pretending its for rather than the reality of checking up on your neighbours?

No worries Fuzzy, i may have been over sensitive (shoot the messenger and all that).

The real reasons it's there, are for the reasons we've all come to, imo - there's no need for it to be a public site whatsoever. The police and relevant insurers who may need the info, already have access to it....

Normally, data protection requirements are to be met by the body holding the data, not by anyone saying "Yes, I will only use this info within the legal requirements" by ticking a box on a web page, lol.

It's shockingly incomplete too. I got pulled cos i wasn't on it - i had to call my insurance company there and then, who confirmed i was insured - and have been for 11 years.... A friend of mine was the same - it seems that there is no automated/standard system for updating it.

Rick, it's the insurance co's responsibility to add the details, except for traders who have access (and responsibility) to add the info - both within 7 days.
