Bit difficuilt. If it was me the first thing I would do is a compression test. Get a cordless impact wrench or drill with a 24mm socket to turn the crank over and a compression tester in the spark plug holes one by one.

Not a hope in hell of turning the engine fast enough to get a correct reading with these tools.
I would though take the plugs out and see what you can see down the holes, lookfor signs of h/gasket leaks as well, ask a lot of questions, only buy if cheap enough to leave you enough money for a complete rebuild, that is what I would do, if you can get a starter on it to turn(booster pack?) you would then be in a position to take a compressions reading at least.
Why is the engine out of the car ?

Cant really do much with it out. check the engine turns. will have some resistance due too compression. if its got a box and starter you could bridge the starter and check the compressions that way. as tabetha says look into the cylinders and look for signs of washed pistons. find out as much as you can about the engine.
