Default explain play in turbo

when a turbo has bad wear there is play in the shaft, what way does the play go?
is it in and out the turbo or side to side? my turbo is not fooked but a m8 of mine destroyed his and want to know exactly what happens.

surely there will always be play side to side?

i think its the other way round, in and out is bad, minimal side to side is normal on a used turbo. saying that my turbo was shot even though it had none of the above

there should be no in and out play that is bad but you are ok for side to side but only a small amount as they fill with oil under pressure and take up the spare play.

Hi, You will always have some side to side movement, this is quite normal as the bearings are fully floating... about 0.5 mm is normal, any more than that and the bearings are starting to wear.... in and out movement is controlled by the thrust bearing. any movement in this direction can be considered wear as it will cause the oil control rings (seal) to damage there seatings, and the end result will be smoke ...!!!!

Hope this helps....

Cheers

Steve

side to side is okay, as it has no oil pressure in it, but in and out is bad!

there will be some play, its a floating bearing!!!!

check to soot/oil stains on blades and in intercoller feed pipe!!!

On rsts you can hear when the turbo's on its last legs as when its comes on boost it will make a small whining noise, very similar to a police siren in the distance!!
