Default Escort cossie wont turn off

Escort cossie wont turn off

im buying/bought a 1993 escort cossie, standard spec. its a nice car but has one major problem.

it wont turn off!

you can even take the key right out and ignition, lights etc all go off and it still runs, only way to turn it off is to stall it!

I thought it was the small metal sensor held in buy a plate and two screws to the right of the inlet mainfold, which i think is some sort of fuel, air mix sensor. i was told as the car was standing for over a year there valves sometimes need cleaning out, as they stick open and the engine runs on buy sucking fuel in?

this has been cleaned out througherly but the problem still remains!?

all i can think now is the actual ignition barrel is faulty. i also notice there was a clifford alarm fitted in the past, but its has only just developed this problem so dont think its anythin to do with this being removed.

Anyone else experience this or got any ideas, i can live with it for now but its going to bugger my clutch before long?

thanks in advance.

can you hear if the fuel pump is still running when you take the key out. if so sounds like the ecu is getting a live feed from somewhere as the ecu powers the fuel pump relay. check the ignition barrel to see if the live feed is still live when the key is out and then i would check the engine loom. i have a engine loom diagram if you need it.

i dont think the fuel pump was pumping, was in the car at time to, so will have to check again.didnt hear nothing and as fuel pumps are quite loud im sure it wasnt still going.

although when you stall it to stop it the car is then totally dead. which makes me think its not an ignition barrel problem.

as id have thought when i stall the car the pump would still be going pointing to the ignition live, but as soon as the engines stalled/off the car is dead just like it should be when you normally turn it off.

You are either a miracle worker, or very rich if you can get a car to run with no fuel, and no fuel pump running.
If it is NOT got a turbo timer fitted, try disconnecting your REAR FOG light switch, and see what happens, also are you holding your foot on the brake pedal as you turn off ?
If none of the above then you are looking at a sticky relay, the ECU feed relay.

ok went for a drive yesterday, and it turned off no probs. so its an intermitant fault.

so this rules out turbo timer and also an alarm removel cock up.

so its is either a dodgy relay or the ignition barrel itself!

Most people complain when the car won't run!! Not when the car won't stop running!!

Sounds like you might have a sticking relay feeding the engine management system. For it to stay running with the ignition off, the whole engine management system including fuel pump and ignition system will have to be live.

remove the cover under the steering wheel and about 6" down from the barrel will be a plug to unplug the ignition barrel when the car will not turn off try unplugging the barrel if the car cuts out it's more than likley the barrel if it continues to run the problem lies else where. The mk5 escort in general suffered from crap fuse boxes i have changed many of these in the past. i would look at the fuse box next if you have no luck with relays.

Had this with a Mk6 1300, it was water in the fuse box.
are the cossie boxes in the same place ?

I just had it with my new ecu, as the tech edge was feeding enough current to keep the main control relay windings energised, a diode soon cured it though.

mate this is a thread from back in febuary, problem is long gone and sorted.

turns out it was a dodgey alarm instalation, some sort of relay was put in there and some times it would keep the ignition live even tho the key was off.

i just disconnected it all, and now all is fine.
