What does cat D write off mean?
Been looking at a cheap van which is on hpi as a cat d write off, just wanted to know what cat d means and what other categorys are they
Hi M8
Cat D means that the insurer decided not to repair for whatever reason(uneconomical, owner did not want it back, they could bridge the gap with the salvage value...etc etc)this is the category for the lightest damaged vehicle and means that it is repairable but they just did not bother....
there is usually no bother re-insuring these, occasionally the insurance company will ask for an engineers report, but not always.....so if its cheap and it looks repaired ok its probably a decent buy.........
Rob........

my escort was classed as a cat D write off and that rolled down a motorway embankment, had dents in the roof where it had almost crushed me to death!
there were splits in the sills where the fencing had broken thru into the car and was burried into the rear seats, basically the car was beyond fooked and people seemed to be astounded at how i managed to escape the car alive so id guess CAT D would not allow the car back on the road again! ie Destroyed!
a mate who works for a motor finance company did a check on my car about a month later just out of curiosity to see what it would come up with and it came up 'awaiting to be destroyed'
When the claim had finally paid out and they came to take the car away i was told that the car was only heading to one place due to the severity of its condition and that was to be crushed!
