my FRST used to do shit like that, it turned out to be the pump pressure was low ( fucked pump) have you tried the norm, change plugs and leads? you may have a split lead. try cleaning out the idle control vavle ( on the side of the EFI unit or if early modle on the air box) or could be simple vac pipe split.

badly setup or needs a service, 1st thing to look at...

normally id sugest ignition timing is wrong, but you cant adjust it on an XR2i... lol

This was the symptoms we had on Rachels 2i mate. After a company diagnosed the fuel pump and charged us Ł500 to sort it the problem was still there . A breakout box was added between the ECU and loom and once the ECU wiring had been disturbed the fault never re apppeared

Sounds like an ECU issue to me, or maybe some kind of air leak.

Neil,
In most common order:

1) Throttle position sensor.
2) Base Co too low.
3) Plugs gapped too small (<1mm)

However, if this is teh jerking at low rpm when you try and maintain a very low speed its possibly a "Feature" of teh car and it needs chipping to remove the overun fuel shutoff.

Its all a bit modern for him, he's used to Points, Condensors and the such... still living in the 60's

Also worth giving the connections on the flywheel sensor a clean as they can cause those sort of problems when they are dirty.
