Tramping as I know it is when a leaf spring twists sideways under load and then springs back and so on.
Cured on the Ford works cars by use of anti-tramp bars..
..but seeing as Cos's don't use leaf springs it's completely irrelevant!

Its not irrelevent to me Phil as i am deffo getting the symptoms of tramping on my cossie under hard launching since i fitted the coil overs
OMG
we used to go tramping, all you need is a 5 gallon container full of petrol, some woods and a good pair of quiet NIKES,. cheers nomad
ps some days we use to average 25 to the gallon

fpmsl,as jules and jim have said i was gonna post this aswell
mind you mine dont do it all the time, plus i only springs/shock with coil assitors
i put it down to the different road surfaces,ie to grippy
maybe now i have the back raised up i might try and run it without the assitors, but i dont really want it squatting to much and losing grip

I get a problem when I nail my rst2 hard. The gearlever appears to thump the underneath of the car.I know its not what you talkin about but its a horrendous noise.makes you back off.sounds like the gear linkages are gonna come through the floor.I wondered if a rubber mounting has worn out or is loose?

I had this problem a while ago. when i looked into it was told it was because the nose of the diff is lifting and as it lifts the wheels get fired on the ground because of the bouncing nose.
try changing your rear diff mount.
Cheers

a new relocated diff mount of course pops
ggr sell an "anti tramp" aka a fast road beam kit - GGR068 - Ł52.50
consists of a big plastic washers that you fit on the rear beam bushes to stop movement

just changing the diff mount aint gonna solve ya problem m8 !!
its all about the full package , the biggest offenders are them fookin shit big fook off bushes on the front of the beam , if you put a bar on them you will find they will actually lift about and inch up and down - these need to go , full alluminium units are req in there , then we have the rear mount these too have masses of play, this also needs to be solid mounted , the GRPA unit was a full diff back plate with the solid mount cast into it with the 4 bolt holes up to the chassis
tramp/axle bounce is very undesirable, the grip you loose is massive , this needs to be sorted, the reason that you sometimes get this phenomenon is that either you have got enough grip on the road surface that the force(propulsion) has taken the easier option than sending the car forward , so hence the traction breaks and the wheels come off the ground, when you dont get it (at full chat) is because the wheel will be spinning on the tarmac , hence the force has another easy route (no road grip) hence the massive wheelspin!!
ok so far ????
as for the coil over job , springs and valving are another major part in the prevention of this , if you have no other movement on the rear of the car , then its down to the shockers , what coil overs have you got ??
i would poss suggest that the springs are too soft , and the combination of the 'bump' part of the valving is very low allowing the force of teh spring to be overcome and the fact that this 'bump valving' isnt enough to stop the oil flowing through the valves hence you will get the tramp.
if you are talking about what i call 'road going' coil overs then these are really only marginally better than uprated shocker/spring setup all you get is adj ride height, these manufacturers have to keep the 'road' element of teh spring/valve combination for drivability !!

mine used to do this on coil overs so i changed my suspension. i had new springs made bought new konis and had the rears revalved by a suspension specialist straight away it doesnt do it now and has very good traction from a standing start i also dont run a rear anti roll bar.

so 1st thing to try is to set the rear shocks softer then?
mine are almost at full soft, and the car's almost std rideheight too...
now i spose its time to look at bushes, mounts etc. etc.?

Jim Galbally,
if i have knackered bushes/mounts shall i get em replaced with poly ones
if i have knackered bushes/mounts shall i get em replaced with poly ones
jim provided you got spherical joints in the rear arms or at worst new bushes , then change the large beam mounting bushes for somat really hard and that wil stop tha happening !!
