Default Escort Van

I’m going to look at a van tomorrow for my old chap. It is a escort van 1800D on a P done 101K, has no s/h as it cam from a firm And “apparently” has had a recent cambelt but before the guy bought it and he doesn’t have the invoice for it Apparently filthy, has a dent in the wing and bonnet, but has a brand new bonnet to go with it (needs painting etc) it has new tax but he “thinks” it has test till jan. He wants 1k for it. Out of all the others for the year etc it is the cheapest we can find, it is only for my dads work so dents and light scratches etc aint a prob, reliability etc is. I know really what I am looking for but don’t really look at vans, what are the main areas I need to check at? It sounds a bit iffy as I asked for the reg and he don’t know it As we want to hpi it before hand…. We are probs gonna say to get a new mot on it and we will pay the asking price….What do you guy’s think?

hes probably a trader in disguise from what you've said, it'll be bollocks about belt change in that case and its imperative on them engines-we sell 1.8diesel heads on a weekly basis.
to be honest on a p you can pick up tidy ex bt and 1 owner since for around 6-700 so i wouldnt pay a bag of sand for one with dubious history.

I have no idea on prices of vans, I know that a lot in the paper seem to be maybe one or 2 years newer and are nearly 2 grand with no s/h....

as soon as you buy one change the cam belt AND the 'nylon' toothed wheel too to the steel one available from ford. Even if it has had a new one it aint worth the risk not doing it

nylon wheel? Not sure what you mean by that Lee? Well, we are going to look at it in the morning, along with a couple more at a traders place.... If all goes well we will put a deposit down on it, not buy it....but i really doubt we will buy it, even if my old man is desperate.

where the cam belt is there is a toothed wheel that the belt goes around. Some of the diesels had nylon ones...hard plastic. These wear the belt and a steel replacement is available.
