Default Gearbox options - RST

In the not too distant future, I will be looking at a power increase on my Escort but the box I have won't last I dont think (well I know )

The new box will need to take around 350bhp and around 400 ft/lb of torque.

I dont really want to fit a mk5 rs2000 box as this involves cutting the chassis, but have heard that it might be possible to fit rs2000 internals into a s1/s1 box chassis

Is there any other options I have?

1. Regular B5 or IB5 replacments

2. MTX conversion

That's it. The MTX internals cannot be fitted into the B5 casing, or else why do you think people bother going to trouble of modding the chassis?

Dingy, no the boost wasnt turned down

And if I do hike the power, I will need to be speaking to brom etc for ways in which the handling can be improved to aid traction etc, maybe get road legal slicks

Christian, Im sure somewhere was doing mods to the standard box chassis, grinding out of the inside to get the gearset in

Cant remember where, possibly Warleydaddy told me

That'll certainly get you well on the way to broken gearboxes. Sadly these FWD cars need a weak link. If you give them grip, the next weak link is the gearbox. If you make the gearbox tough, the next weak link is the driveshafts and so on.......

Stu

Just get an MTX and then get an MEF suspension setup

I dunno why you're bothered about chopping the chassis slightly? Its hardly original RS concourse car.

It will be awesome with the above mods, totally awesome

fit the mtx it's the only way and no one will make a big tooth box for them because no one would buy one for the money they would be asking

But it's an expensive conversion and how much stronger is the MTX in reality? Who has really pushed one?

It looked like close to £2k to me using Jano's bits, including the Quaife diff. That's alot of money if its not a certainty.

We can supply and fit a full OS-Giken 5 speed gearkit including shafts to a 200SX for only a little more than that.

300+bhp? How about with 400lb of Torque? My 350bhp only makes just over 300lb of Torque.

To spend that kind of money on a conversion and still break boxes would be a pisser. That's the reason I haven't done it. Seeing the gearsets side-by-side just didn't inspire me.

hi christian

well it's 6 of one and half dozen of the other , they will either buy and uprated box of fit an mtx75 which is hell of alot stronger than uprated rst box

theres noway the rst boys will spend 2+k on a box, no fooking way

btw Kennys rs2000 had well over 350 bhp and he never had any probs with the mtx75

MT285 Getrag 6 speed.

No chassis to cut, just weld on brackets.

Had my Getrag box to bits alongside a GTO Getrag box and the gears, bearings and shafts are the same size (big). GTO box good for well over 500bhp.

Clutch, flywheel, diff, shafts, box = £2500

Its another option?

fooking fair play to you theres not that many that would spent that kind of money on a box only the die hard cases

they would rather spend that kind of money on shiny bits

2k for a bullet (mullett ) proof box I would rather pay than buy umpteen other boxes at 1k+ each

I do have a perfectly good quaife atb diff in my box at the moment

At the moment, of all the options, I'm most inspired by the 6-Speed as Simon has. It's still ALOT of money, but it seems the safest bet.

Bearing in mind the cost of the rebuilt box which isnt any more expensive to build than a good IB5 which you would have to buy anyway.

It has not cost me anywhere near £2.5k to fit a MTX75 box and shafts, although I will admit mine has not seen any action yet and is still on unequal driveshafts.

if only more people done some of these conversions, reyland or somewhere should fabricate the parts etc too for mtx conversions i dont mind paying people for fabricating bits but i dont like paying silly prices like 2k to have a £50 gearbox fitted in an escort, i know it has custom shafts, linkage and mount etc but still 2k?

Well i just fitted this as Si has mentioned its fairly straight forward to install.

As you now most ford bolt patterns on fwd boxs are the same and the st170 box is no exception. The only area i would not be sure on for the cvh block would be the rear posistion starter...

Has anyone fitted a mtx box with this does the block allow that... thats the only area i would check!!! zetecs are fine.

As for fitting- fabricate a mount and she fits with loads of room, much narrower than any other box but its a little bulkier so i have had to loose the brake servo and master cylinder.
bias box is used now which solves the hydrulic clutch issue.

Si has used and abused his like he says and i believe on strip down recently no signs of wear at all....quiafe diff needs to be added.

Ive yet to test mine but will be throwing 450 through it so will let you know.

Also you can get uprated parts for these now like uprated poly mounts etc.

You have to run a st170 compatible clutch/fly
