I had a noisy lifter on my Cosworth last year so I had them all changed with a new set from Matt Lewis. On Monday I noticed that it sounds like one of them has gone noisy again The car has only done 300 miles since they were changed though so what could have caused it and what can I do to try and rectify it?

TBH, if its happened that quickly, then unless you have an oil stavation problem, I would be suspecting a faulty lifter.

 

That's what I was thinking so I was wondering if there could be something blocked up It's only just done it again and it goes away once it's warmed up You can hear it much worse inside the car than you can with the bonnet open

Is it worth running some engine flush through it then changing the oil & filter? The car has done 87k and the oil was last changed last April/May time with Mobil 1 15w/50w I think.

Its worth changing anyway, but I doubt it will fix the problem if its fairly recent oil to begin with.

 

Could it be worth a flush? I've heard good and bad things about it Not sure what to do because I don't like noises from engines.

 

Not sure where i read it but don't think you can run oil flush through a turbo. I maybe wrong.

 

Chuck a litre or two of diesel in the oil and let it idle for a few mins if you want a cheap and cheerful flush that works well.

But personally, in general I prefer reguarly oil changes to any sort of flushing through.

Soaking the lifters in carb cleaner can help too.

 

were they genuine ina lifters?
pattern ones don't last. also worth an oil change if it's been nearly a year.
change oil in my cars at least every 6 months regardless of milage. if the car has done hardly any miles & just started occaisionaly the oil may be diluted with fuel & moisture. most cossies will run rich on cold start.

 

They were INA lifters & my car runs very very rich on start-up since having the gunship done.

I'm thinking maybe a flush followed by an oil and filter change might be in order

 

300 miles in 10 months , car needs to be used for the moisture to evaporate & fuel that may be in the oil burnt off. if you do start it up occaisionally then let it get up to temp or better still take it for a run

 

Exactly as said, all oils release varnish, which will jam things up as you are not using the car.
If you do this monthly start up crap you WILL have problems, it needs to be driven, a drive every three months is better than starting and idling every month or so.
The tappets will no doubt be perfectly ok once used a bit.
As for flush perfectly safe, and make absolutely NO difference to a turbo at all, I use them on every oil change about 200 miles before it's due then run around with the stuff in, the engine is like new inside.
