Default unequal lenght shafts

I've heard that the rear shafts on a 4x4 saff are not the same lenght but are a straight swap for 2wd saff rear shafts.......why is this? and is there any advantage to having equal lenght shafts?

The 2wd shafts are not the same length as each other either. Equal length shafts on fwd cars do help prevent torque steer. If im correct the propshaft would have to be off centre of the body shell to make the shafts at the back the same length. Or make the drive flanges fatter.

Correct, and the 2wd shafts wont fit a 4wd car anyway the lobros/c.v's are different sizes as well as the shaft sizes .

Im pretty sure the prop is in the centre of the car, the rear shafts are unequal lengths due to the diff. One side has more material on it (to house crown wheel) therefore you need a shaft shorter for that side.

the 4wd shafts are the same as found on any sierra/granada with rear discs

but there are 3 differentlengths so you need to make sure you get the right ones if you are going to swap them over

they come in 18.5, 20 and 20.5 inch lengths
