Default Focus Rs is front wheel drive

hi

anyone else heard this , it's supposed to have electronically controlled front diff to help traction

jose caspio said that "4wd is not needed by today standards" and he said the 4wd system it would add another 150 kilo it would effect the performance because of it's power to weight ratio.

i read that it's aimed at cars like the R32 Golf and hot hatches like this

not the evo or subaru

Turbo fwd's are gay

My calibra would spin up in 3rd in the dry, 4th in the wet.
No diff etc admittedly, but then restricting the power is restricting your progress anyway compared to proper traction.
What fucking good is is that, alright if you're a teenager.

They cant compete with the likes of Mitsubishi or Subaru & imo the Escort Cosworth was the last good sports car they made.

I bought the mag Auto car today because it had the Rs Focus on the front cover

they have a 4wd system for it out of the Volvo S60 fook nose why they wont use it

it might not even get the wider arches as ford have to make money on it

so the wide arches might be droped to save cost aswell at a few other bits

whats the point of it....... lets be honest im a little bit dissapointed and feel let down by ford what a shower of wankers

I read the same in Evo. Easy way round it - give it 350 horses out the box and 4wd it ! Job done, a car that'll compete and people will want to buy.

The secret’s out. Ford is working at top speed on a brand new, 155mph Focus RS – designed, in performance terms, to take up where the previous version left off – and wants it on the market early next year at about Ł25,000, a price deliberately calculated to embarrass Volkswagen’s fast-but-flabby Golf R32.

The new RS, which incorporates the updates made to more basic Focus models for 2008, aims at the same hardcore enthusiasts who bought the original Focus RS launched in 2002, and will be foreshadowed by a near-production concept at the London motor show this summer. It will be the 21st in a line of RS-badged fast Fords that started with the Escort RS1600 in 1970.

How fast will the new Focus RS be?

The production model's output is still being calibrated at a figure somewhere north of 280bhp, but it's likely to be governed at the 155mph. Expect it to achieve 0-60mph in under six seconds, aided by an extra-trick electronic front diff that puts the power down better than ever in a seriously powerful two-wheel-drive car, and

0-100mph in around 12-13sec. In summary, we’re looking at Jaguar XKR performance, which is highly impressive at the price.

What have they done to the engine?

The 20-valve, 2.5-litre, five-cylinder turbo engine comes straight from the 222bhp Focus ST, but it gets modified pistons, cams and valve springs, a bigger turbo, a larger intercooler and modified electronics to produce its 280bhp.

Why doesn’t the RS have four-wheel drive?

For reasons of weight and cost, but also because engineers believe it’s not needed, despite the high power output. The Ford group does have a four-wheel drive system – already fitted to some Volvo S60s – that could be adapted, but it would add at least 150kg to the car and cut its power-to-weight ratio. Ford is still debating whether to use its six-speed PowerShift gearbox (the equivalent of VW’s DSG system) in the car.

When can I see one?

Expect pictures and details right here – and in Autocar magazine – just before the London motor show starts late in July. Then visit Ford’s stand at Excel, where you’ll see a near-production concept, designed to “raise awareness”. After its show debut, expect the RS to go on sale in March 2009.

Find out more about the new Focus RS in the January 23 issue of Autocar magazine and read about every hot hatch due out

Why did they bother making it then - sound to me like it'll just be a Focus ST with a couple more ponies......

Love how it's aimed at the R32 - yet the R32 is 4WD anyway

Should have had 300-350 bhp, wider track and 4WD - to make a discernable difference between it and the ST : old shape FRS had 220bhp to the ST's 170bhp - a 50bhp increase. New ST has 225bhp, so the new FRS should have at LEAST 275 - and considering the Audi S3 puts out 265bhp and the Golf R32 makes 241bhp, Ford could have TROUNCED these models with 300bhp and 4WD... If Audi pull out the stops and introduce the RS3 they were messing around with last year, which could have the Golf R32's V6 lump which is easily tuneable to 350bhp, or knowing Audi, quite possibly a stupid V6/V8 Twin Turbo lump in it ( ) then Ford are fucked and no-one will buy thier shit, meaning the RS will drop like the ST has......

I should be in charge of research and model production at Ford methinks - you lot would get a bunch of better cars out of it! Ford have been dumbing down for years now and just aren't bothering to put both feet in the performance world anymore.... Audi, BMW, VW etc are, but Ford is lacking.... It might, however, have something to do with the fact people probably (generally) won't pay Audi/VW money for a Ford tho - we all say we will on here, but I wonder how many HONESTLY would buy the new FRS if it had a 350bhp 4WD power unit in it, wider areches and decent styling, and actually pay around Ł29k (approx OTR price (new) of an 07 plate Audi S3) for it...... Not many I should think

they will sell the lot regaurdless of 4wd or not

its just that they would sell out twice as quick if it was 4wd

the price tag would be more than 25k atleast 35k i would say

how much is a brand new EVO 9/10 ?

I can't see Ford selling a lot of these, specially if the price is nearer Ł35k! Even if it did have 4WD!

Thrush you mong the focus ST depreciates like any other normal mass produced car, its not a limited run 'special'

Supply and demand set price.

with a limited supply of brand new ST's the second hand market will have loads of lower priced cars

RS's always sell regardless. Is FWD really that bad? I've never driven 4wd but look how good the old focus RS was.

From the official Ford website:

Ford of Europe will not reveal any of the technical details of the new Focus RS until closer to launch in 2009. The company plans to show a concept version of the car publicly for the first time in mid-2008.

"We will use the redesigned 2008 Focus ST as the base for a no-compromise RS model that will become the ultimate road-going Focus," Capito added. "Just as the Focus RS WRC owns the rally circuit, we want the new Focus RS to own the road, so we have the major competitors in our sights as we develop the car's performance, design, handling and braking."

"We're not ready to confirm any of the technical details of the new Focus RS yet - Jost and his team have a lot to do to finalise the exact specification and styling," said Fleming. "But make no mistake, I can assure you that ultimately, the car we plan to launch will be worthy of wearing the coveted Ford RS badge."

How many people have rushed out and bought a copy of Autocar magazine for "more info"? Especially people who normally would not buy it!

There's a lot pf people knocking the RS for being FWD before it's even turned a wheel. Surely no one can comment until it's actually been driven??

There's a lot of pub talk about how 4WD and RWD is soooooooo much better, but I could reel of a list of FWD cars that handle fantastically.

If there's one thing Ford's been very good at it's producing great handling FWD cars.

Give it a chance, and if it's a bunch of dog toffee I'll be the first in line to slate it!! But if it's a cracker then there will be a lot of people dining heartily on humble pie.

Sadly many won't even consider it purely because it's 'pulled not pushed' but I can guarentee they'll sell every single one without problem.

The current Focus RS 0-100mph is 14.9s as tested by Evo Magazine and an Audi S3 0-100mph was 19.9s as tested by Auto Car Magazine, not to mention being 4 seconds quicker to 100mph than the Impreza WRX (215bhp 0-100= 18.3) as tested by Evo magazine.

As Ford have said, the official spec wont be revealed to the public until nearer launch time.

Why don't u people get it!!!

The cosworths are all homologation specials that were built to win. The Focus RS is just a replacement for the Escort RS turbo, which is also FWD if u remember.... The new Focus RS will sell, and of course ford need to make money - otherwise there would be NO POINT making it. As long as WRC exits, ford will never make a cosworth replacement. Look how good the last Focus RS was!

I think the difference will be negligible. All have similar power figures, and I'd imagine similar power-to-weight . They'll drive differently, but there's no way they'd trounce the Focus.

I tell you what let's persuade Porkie to lend us the cash, you buy a Scooby, I buy a Focus and I'll race ya!

You can't compare an Escos to a Focus RS! Even in standard trim, the Escort kicks the fuck out of the Focus, both in terms of performance & looks!

That's my opinion at least

All the electronic shit added to a front wheel drive just takes power away until there is enough grip for two wheels.

The rules in WRC need changing so at least 500 cars have to be built with the same drive train configuration as the cars competing.

And you know this how? Did you attach a flux capacitor to the Sierra?

I'm the first to admit I don't know a lot about cars that don't actually exist yet!

hi dan

i would love to see a decent 4wd focus if you think a normal front wheel drive car is a total match for a 4wd evo/subaru you need to keep taking the tablets and btw and track days dont prove nothing they are just abit of fun

i have beat evos/ scoobs /cossies in my rs2000 mk5 and thats front wheel drive but that doesn't prove nothing

There there, dry your tears Marco
I think the difference will be negligible. All have similar power figures, and I'd imagine similar power-to-weight . They'll drive differently, but there's no way they'd trounce the Focus.

I tell you what let's persuade Porkie to lend us the cash, you buy a Scooby, I buy a Focus and I'll race ya!

Hi dan

you are seriously dreaming both cars out of the box the scooby/evo would ponce all over it in every department

i thought you knew alot about cars seems not then
