Check the wire has not rubbed through and is touching earth somewhere as this will make it read full.
If after disconnecting the lead it goes to zero it is either seriously overheating or you have a duff sender.

i dont mean to sound silly but what wire, on the ack of the dial?
also I dont think it is running hot because it hasnt been anywhere near hot in all the time ive used it, and i only noticed it when i went out to the shops before. And I think if it had been like that before i should have noticed it?!

The wire is the one going to the temperature sender on the engine, to test the gauge just earth it out an dthe gauge will read maximum.
Don't confuse this with the CTS, coolant temperature sender, which is for the ECU, and has NOTHING to do with the gauge.
Unfortunately I do not know the layout of your engine so cannot tell you where it is.

if its the ohv engine its on the n/s of the engine i think on the thermostat housing just stick a paper clip in either end and if it reads full like tabetha said its ok
