disk cleanup
de frag.

Should help a bit. Also, what spec is it running? Could be that your spec is lagging behind a bit.

yeah thats a very old pc you got there, as said above you "could" upgrade internals but since its such an old pc/case theres no point and its not worth the hassle, plus you would need someone to take out the parts and put the new ones in for you.

Im going to take an educated guess at the spec you require based on your currant spec, because you clearly dont use the pc for games so that brings the price down alot straight away, id go for a core 2 duo pc, there the best processors for the money right now

Have a look at this
InspironTM 530 on the left http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/pr...n&s=dhs&~ck=mn

base price of £249 but you need to click on"customize" and then select the 3rd option for the core 2 duo E4500 and then scroll down and you will see all the different parts you can choose, go to the memory and select 2048(gigs) and then the price will be about £379, for that you will have a decent spec
if thats way too much let us know, ive no idea what your budget is

do a pc world special for £500 and get yourself a 22" moniter to go with the computer plus you get loads of crap free

if you are c omputer nerd theny ou can spec a machine to your requirements, if you are a complete novice then you need to have certain things and take your pick from the choices you've got in front of you

all i do when my pc slows down is buy a new hdd, bung the old one in on slave and delete the windows and program files folders, then i got more storage and same speed as before

But you really need an upgrade, could build a pc very cheap second hand that would be quick for general use.

i built my pc and i know almost nothing about them....i built a media centre Pc to my spec for just under £300 and its very good

go for a core 2 duo, or AMD 64 (if budget is tight)

mine:

Case (with psu)£100
CPU £40
HD £50
Ram £60
Mobo £40

would have been much cheaper with a cheaper case but i wanted the antec fusion one as it looks the nuts

get down to pc world and look in the sales, theres some bargains to be had

yes

but if knows nothing about computers then he needs to think abotu what he needs first, and then find a few different things that he can shortlist so as to get a better picture of what is the best thing for him to have

no point in getting a flash computer if all he's going to do is use it as a calculator, but then again no point in having a calculator if he wants it to use as a media centre etc

so even though you know what he wants and can tel him what it'll cost, he doesn't

I wouldnt buy a PC just yet, you have a 2.4ghz processor which is more than adequate if all you want to do is browse then net, view photos taken on a digital camera etc.. I would personally buy some extra ram(£40) as with only 256mb you have the bare minimum.

Another thing not mentioned is that you may have a virus and spyware on your pc. If you go to this link and download this program, install and use it to check your pc.

http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html

If you can also press the control, alt and delete keys together a window will pop up, click the performance tab at the top and it will tell you what free memory you have.

Just bung in 2x 512Mb of ram, if you only use it to browse the web and look some porn it will last you another year or 2.

Tony its so slow it can barely load pictures on the net mate, i think his spec does have something to do with this and its just bogging down.

Ok a new hdd or more ram may speed things up but at the end of the day he has a very old celeron, i think its worth upgrading the whole thing for a few hundred then he wont have to worry about it for 4-5 years, and he will have some comeback if anything goes wrong with that dell

If you dont have the cash for a new pc then by all means get another gig or two of ram in there

If he just browses the net etc.. then he does not need a big spec an the extra power the PC has is wasted. I would put money on his PC being clogged with Spyware etc.. My brother only uses his PC to play online poker and its a 900mhz celeron with 512mb ram and it runs ok for this use.

I see the point of what you are saying and it makes far more sense than him majorly upgrading what he has. I just feel that for a quick scan with adaware and perhaps £40 of ddr ram that it will be ok for him.

2.4 celeron shouldn't be slow if just doing one thing at a time.

cheap ram upgrade is and cleanup is the best for him now.

But if you start processor upgrade, hdd, and everything else, just throw it out of the window and buy a new one.
