Default pug 106 diesel - internet diagnosis!

Right,

Its a 1994 106 1.5 non-turbo diesel.

Has problems starting (cranks quickly and eventually fires), much worse when cold.

So far has had 4 glow plugs and the relay/timer/ecu.

Other information includes the Rad has recently (6months ago) was replaced and now the heater matrix is leaking.

What do you think it is??!!

I presume you've actually checked you are getting a voltage at the glowplugs??

Other than that you've got to be thinking a lack of compression somewhere headgasket, rings or perhaps injector fault??

Yes they get voltage - but not tested current draw or seen them glow.

If it was a inj fault then I would have though the problem wont affect all starts not just cold, and also affect the running (it runs fine when going).

Are cracked heads common on the 1.5 lump?

Put a 12v supply to the plugs prior to starting to see if it helps first, if it does you know you have a bad connection somewhere.
Have you drained the water off from the fuel filter head ?, just up the fuel pressure a bit, and use a CAV filter.
Stick a can of MILLERS diesel cleaner in there works wonders, did on my escort.

why did it have a rad ?

my guess loss of compression, eventually over pressured teh rad hence the leak, now its done the matrix, always looking for the weakest link !

almost...

Inlets are tight, infact one is permantly open

Exhuast are loose!!

So thats the poor starting and fast cranking explained.

Head/gasket looks fine - so the blown rad and leaky matrix could just be coincidence.

had loads of these now valves wear out as do the valve seats causing the tappets to go tight, re shim them in situ - like brand new afterwards!!

I'm running round in one at the moment, nice work horse and cheap as chips to run.

Are head gaskets common on them to go?
