No doubt everyone will start laying into him, as clearly what he did was horrific, but given his mental problems and the fact he was no doubt incapable of thinking straight at the time, the reality is he is as much a victim as she is in many ways.

He didn't know what he was doing is such an over-used excuse that, up here at least, the fact someone is drunk when they do things like this is now counted against them instead of as any kind of mitigating factor.

We need to start extending that away from just alcohol to any reasons for this kind of badness, and accept that people who will do this should just be put to sleep like a mad dog.

He's either bad, in which case he won't be rehabilitated, or he's mad in which case he won't be rehabilitated.
