Hi ive got a sierra 1.8 engine in my car thats been fully rebuilt using all steel internals its been lightened And balanced and im unsure what oil to put in for running it in and how far to run it in for ?
my projects cost me a fair bit now and i dont want to go and waste all the money by putting the wrong oil in thanks for your replyies in advance Mark.

i'd like to know this too.
i've gota 3door that i am about to rebuild the motor, it's a 205 block, and was wondering what oil to use for the break in and for how far as well.
when i did my 2.3 turbo it was 10w40 non synthetic. but not familiar enough with the cossies yet.

Hello to all,
I've been trough this for ages now, so you can rely on my advise if you want to!
When doing running in, you should always do at least 500 miles before going pedal to the metal! especially on cossies! My advise is, that after doing 500 miles running in, get into the pat and change the oil for fully synthetic. Do not race the car into high revs using mineral oil! Only after changing to fully/syn you can go as fast as you like. At this stage, you can raise the boost too! Do not run high boost during running in with mineral oil! Cossies are sooooo fragile
When building cosworths i use these type of oils:
Running in: Torco TR1 20w50(mineral oil)
After running in: Torco SR5 5w50 (fully synthetic)
My car is a 500+ bhp cossie and always used these types of oil and never had somekind of trouble regarding oil or oil pressures!
Hope i helped you out!

so when you say mineral oil, do you mean regular petroleum based oil or actual mineral oil. just trying to make sure there isn't a translation error between english and american here. i don't want to go and put a bunch of mineral oil (well american mineral oil) and find out it's very different from what you are saying and totally fuck my motor. they're just a little hard to come by over here.

you can get special running oil, that helps prevent bore glaze during the running in process, have used it on several occasions with good results, for 500miles then use fully syntetic. just use low boost ,but dont nurse the engine as it wont bed the rings in if you do......
great sounds good.
one more question, i have always read and been told that during break in you run the motor in varying driving conditions but just not over 3000 rpm. is that the same with the yb's?

Hi,
when doing break in, it's important not to run the engine through high revs on every gear! Till 3000 revs it's agood range but make sure not to exceed it! If it's yb, it's important to keep the boost as low as possible.
As for myself when doing break in with a cossie, i remove completely the dump valve and fit a common filter. With this, no boost will enter the engine and so, the boost will flow out the hose pipe(throttle to intercooler).
The rule of thumb during break in, is to cruise the engine through every gear in a low rev range.
Hope i helped you out
