after driving round in circles for 30seconds he gets it going

wait till it gets a bit wet (less grip)
find a very big open space (so you don't hit anything)
with a conctrete surface (less grip)
put it on full lock to the right (trust me on this one, otherwise you will feel sick)
start going round and round slowly so you know what sort of space you are likely to require
then go slightly quicker and quicker, all the while keeping the traction going
once you get used to the sensation you can then plant it and lift of and plant it and lift of so you know what to expect
drive away
drive back to the spot and, as you get to the bit you want to spin around on, give it large and pull the steering wheel on full lock again
the turn will unsettle the car and it will start to spin
and it will spin and spin, like stav says, on it's axis
if anyone can remember trax from a few years ago i kept mine going for about 7 minutes and there were 3 circles of burnt grass on the infield at silverstone before the little bloke on his moped chased me out
i even lost part of my exhaust, but that wasn't as funny as my mrs standing there looking shocked as i was "escorted" off of the premisis
as a total novice it will start out feeling really strange, but once you've ond ie you will either stop doing it or carry on and end up breaking something

doing what dojj said and driving round and round in tight circles is what everyone seems to try and why nobody seems to be able to donut anymore unless its on grass or something similarly homosexual.
if your just trying to spin around and not do something that takes a bit of effort like donutting round a road cone etc, just full lock from a standing start and give it loads, simple as.

if you have an open diff at the front you will get both back wheels to spin and th einner one at the front to spin as well, giving you 3 black lines with smoke pouring out of them
